I'd go with 9mm. It's the cheapest of the big bore ammo. Plus there's a huge selection of guns from 150 dollar hi points for the range to h&k usp. It all a matter of what you want it for. I believe you also asked in another forum about a glock or xd. Both of those were 9pm also. Then you wouldn't need lots of different ammo plus you can find cheap carbines if you want a rifle.

Yeah, 9mm is decently priced and I plan on getting one, but I was wanting a dif. caliber rifle (for distance) that wasnt too much more expensive than a .22

How much range? How much accuracy? There are a scant few 9mm carbines out there. For less than 50yds, the Hi-Point ain't bad. More than 50yds and you'll probly want to look at AR-15 9mm carbines.

    What about .17 or 22Mag?

From what I just saw about 4x 22LR
Twice as much $$ for half as many rounds.

+1 on that. Next cheapest is probably a ak47 or sks in 7.62x39. Can get those as cheap as .20-.25 cents a round.

Get a Mosin 91/30 for under a hundred bucks...ammo is relatively cheap and they're wicked fun to shoot. My M44 has become a fun plinker.

I also saw somewhere that beretta made a carbine. If you want distance go with an ak or a cheap ar or mini 14. If you buy bulk you can get the ammo for either pretty cheap. It does take long to go through 1000 rounds with one of those. The first thing is figure out what kind of shooting your going to be doing the most with it and decide from there. Don't know where you shoot but remember some indoor ranges don't allow higher powered rifles. You don't want to buy something that is a pain to go shoot.

    Excellent suggestion Cooks.

There's all types. I would just get whatever you can find cheap at your local sporting good store. You should be able to find something for around $100. Super fun rifle for the price. I love taking mine out when shooting with someone that has never shot before. They always like it. You can get a can of ammo (300 rounds) for under $100.
Polish 7.62x54R 300rds on Chargers 1950s Light Ball

I don't shoot my Mosins enough. I need to get them out of the safe and show them a good time.

    BTW, they are very accurate.

Since you're in North Carolina... Classic Arms near Charlotte has some Mosin Nagant 91/30's in stock for 100$

    Firearms

    You've got some choices:

Izhevsk, Tula, or an Izhevsk Dragoon model. They even have some of the sniper models.

Right below you'll see some spam cans of ammo. 440 rounds for 100$ Nice deal there.

I don't know if they offer in store pickup, I've never purchased from them. Been planning to save up some money and pickup some of their deals.

So...... the cheapest I can get .22 ammo for is about .6 cent a round..... The cheapest I can find .17 for, is 24 cent a round........Which is right on par with 7.62x54

The question now.... which would be a smarter, better buy... being ammo is the same price... .17hmr with a nice scope, or a mosin....

I know I could do more with a mosin, like hunt... and its a bigger round, but I already have plans set to get a 30-06 before hunting season, just for that... so for strictly just fun shooting.... mosin or .17 (I can get a .17 rifle for around $250.... so not much more than a mosin... well not A LOT more)
