I know this is probably a very silly question because I see a few ways it is probably impossible, but I'm asking nonetheless. I want to build an open gun for USPSA and want to shoot major power factor. I shoot my XDm 5.25 9mm in IDPA SSP now and would like to build an open gun on the same platform.
Does anybody know if it's possible to convert a 5.25 9mm to .38 super? Or at the very least, have a 9mm major barrel/chamber made? If so, to whom would I bring this task?
Thanks for any input on this fairly unreasonable question!

Not sure if that's possible. Conversions usually start with a .40 and go to a 9mm or 357...don't think Ive ever seen a 38 Super.

The OAL of the Super may hang you up...it's similar to the 9x23 which will not fit into a 9x19 chamber, not to mention magazine(s).

If you can find someone to make a barrel, .40 mags might work.

ETA: for grins I took a look at BarSto's website...they do not list a 38S conversion barrel for a 5.25" XDM.

I figured OAL would be the hangup, especially talking about magazine fit and mag well size. I suppose my most reasonable option to shoot an XDm in the open division with a major pf would be to suck it up and shoot the .40. I appreciate the input. I'm going to continue to search the interwebs for possibilities of a .38 super XDm though!

From the .40, 357 is just a barrel change (and maybe recoil spring) change away. I just bought a 9mm conversion barrel for my XDM .40...been hoarding 19rd 9mm mags for about 6 mos.

The XDM 40 and 9 use the same mag. A 38 Super is same length as a 45. Been looking at this myself. Not sure if a 5.25 9mm slide would fit on the 5.25 45 frame. If it does, then you would have to have a custom barrel made.

Making it work on a 9 mm 5.25 would require the use of very short flat point style bullets to get OAL down to fit on a 9mm mag and then a chambered barrel.

You can use the 40 cal mags for 9mm in a pinch...but you're likely to have feeding issues. 20161227_101750-1.jpg .40 on the left, 9mm on the right.

Both calibers use the same diameter bullets so i think just a chamber reamer would work to use the same barrel.
The big problem, as you already said, would be the mag length the oal between the 2 would make the super to long.
If you could use a 9mm slide on the 45 frame it might work if the 45 mags could be used for the super.

Frame on a .45 is wider than the 9mm. Slides aren't interchangeable between those 2 calibers.

The only concern there, and i only ask because I haven't been home to check my loading manual, is if .38 super runs higher chamber pressure. I wouldn't want to compromise safety just to make this work. I think I could work up a load with short enough OAL to work in 9mm mags... something else to look into when I get home.

I think I have your solution...
    RIA 10mm 1911 double stack

I think the 38super might just beat the snot out of a XDM9, even if you could get it to work.
