I have searched the forums and from what I think I understand I have to buy the lower receiver using an FFL dealer and I can buy an upper receiver (including barrel) thru the mail without using a licenesed dealer. I'm sure this has been answered multiple times but I can't seem to find it.

You are correct. An exception would be if you did a private sale on a lower with someone local that just wanted to sell theirs. Seems kind of strange huh?

XDMSHAWN, Now that you mention it, without a receipt it could put you in a jam if it was HOT.

There is that... I am just talking about the legit deals between two gun enthusiast. There is always the non-required paperwork that can be done to document the sale. (at least in WA state)

I am doing this as we speak. I made sure I spoke witht he local gun store and they only charge $20 for a ffl transfer. Put my order in for a stripped lower and also the contact of the FFL. Make sure you SHIP the lower to the FFL and not your home address! After order put through I emailed the reciept to the gunstore and they contact the manufactorer with the FFL details. My 1st time and it was a cakewalk. In another 1.5 weeks I will order the top upper kitt that has everything else and also the lower receiver kit. Reason I did not do this at the same time is 1. funds 2. to not put the lower and upper in the same order to avoid the 11% fed tax

I talked to my LGS (FFL) today and discussed he price the upper and lower receivers and order them seperately (taxes). I'm looking at ordering the basics thru him and ordering the addons later. I thought he may be able to get a discount or package deal with my addons. Waiting for him to give me a call back. This is my first time buying an AR so any hints are helpful.

Only hint I can offer since I am a AR virgin as well is to do all the research you can and keep asking questions. Ask the same questions to your LGS and also on the net to see the varied results. Ya I was thinking bushmaster.. but then heard stories about the customer support going hill.. Ya.. spikes.. but then 3 month wait.. Palmetto has darn good deals right now and I decided thats what Iam going with for my 1st Ar instead of Dpms, bravo company, stag arms.. etc.

    Ask questions!!

Another newbie question...How do you know if the upper receiver matches the purchased lower? If I bought the Bravo Co lower as mentioned by xd45beast how do I know the S&W upper will match it?

I would think if the parts have a milspec on them it would work. Someone else chime in about this but from all the reading I have been doing over on the Ar15 forums the ar15 is basicly the barbie doll for guys and you can mismatch uppers and lowers to your hearts content.

All AR15 uppers and lowers should be interchangable. Some may be a bit "tighter" fit than others but some play is not considered a defect and won't effect anything except, maybe, your aesthetic sense.;)

A good form, clear and easy to compare.
