I thought that this might be a useful thread to track the availability and pricing of AK parts kits. As you find a great deal out there, just post the details here. Anyone with experience or more info on any of the kits posted, please feel free to comment.

    To kick it off:-

CenterFire Systems has Rommy B-Grade and C-grade kits right now at $110 and $90 respectively - with varying degrees of rust but also with chrome lined barrels.

J&G have 'very good' condition kits at $140

Is a kit a full (everything you need) package just disassembled. If one is purchased, what else is needed, receiver, trigger kit, etc?

In most cases I believe it's everything but the receiver, but I'm hardly an expert on this.

As I understand it, it's everything EXCEPT the receiver - the receiver being the only part classified as a firearm - so it's perfectly legal to buy the kit and have it shipped directly to you. With an inexpensive $80 receiver, plus transfer fees to FFL and shipping, the theory is that you can build a better AK for a lot less than the minimum $ for a complete gun from a dealer.

Where is a good place to buy a decent receiver and US parts kit, or should there be another thread for this?

KVAR and Global Trades are two that come to mind.

tapco and red star arms are also good places for US made AK parts, although they dont do recievers I dont think. As frenchy said, Global Trades would be a good place to start for that.

    my pleasure

Thank you gentleman, this seems like a much less expensive option, Is there anything I am missing. Do the kits come with standard furniture or are different colors/materials optional?

most kits what you see in the pic is what you get, the stock finishes and exact shape will vary. you typically only have options when you buy expensive kits like the ones K-var sells.

kvar is over priced and the only good thing that comes from tapco is the trigger group. Trigger group counts as 3 parts and costs about $29
Go to your local gun show and pick up a US made pistol grip (counts as 1 part) as well as a US made muzzle break (also counts as 1 part), I have global trades at the fun show so that's what I usually get.
Make your own reciever and bingo, you have your 6 parts to be 922 compliant. (tapco does make reciever flats, but they're suspect on quality)

www.ak-builder.com will give you a good start on where to blow your money. Although I am not a fan of his center supports.

As for the current RUST PROTECTED kits that are coming out, they can be missing parts, and some of the parts can be so rusted you have to get replacements...i.e. bolts and bolt carriers. I wouldn't touch those kits with a 10 foot pole.

I've never heard much on AK builds.... keep the info coming. I would rather build one than buy one whole. Fun and cheaper!
