Good article on how Israel does airport screening.

It could never work here - it takes smart, dedicated security personnel to make it work, and TSA will never have that good a workforce.

    SDProf,
Are you familiar with the term "Andy Frain" WRT ushers and security? Or, is this a Chicago-specific thing? TSA are Andy Frains, brought to the national level.

They have a great system, but there are significant practical issues with implementing Israel-style airport security here in the US. This articles goes over some of them.

I work for a defense contractor and travel to Israel several times a year and have done so for the past 20 years. They have a great system and it works.

They put more emphasis on observed behaviors and a very comprehensive line of questioning. The people doing this are professionals with a high level of training. They have no problem with profiling like we do here in the U.S. We could learn something from them.

One thing I always tell people to take into account when they throw the Israeli airport security up as an example is, yes it works very well in all 2 of their airports. They only have 2 international and 10 domestic airports. We have that many in my 2 adjacent counties. Can you imagine the cost let alone trying to man all US airports with that many good people. It works because they are small. Our system has to be what it is becasue we have to assume that we are working with at least some idiots, therefore you need to make it as simple as possible.

Even a dunce can read a naked scanner. Sorry to say it is that way, but you could not afford to pay that many good people, even if you could find them.

It works because it actually uses intelligent processes, not mindless screening that will never find a terrorist. We are more worried about being Politically Correct, than actually finding the threat. We'd rather grope a grandmother than question a muslim. Pure Idiocy!!

I agree with you to a point, our vast transportation system in the US would not lend itself to the exact type of screening that takes place at the airport in Tel Aviv where I go in and out of all the time. The Israelis are as technically competent as anyone however, they don't just rely on technology to overcome their security issues.

When you live in a place where you have to have guards outside every little cafe or store to try to keep suicide bombers out they have to deal with threats on a day to day basis that Americans can't even comprehend. Seeing what the Israelis have to deal with on a constant basis is an eye opener for anyone who hasn't ever spent any time there.

All the technology in the world can only do so much and the Israelis rely on knowing who the bad guys are. Without doing the type of profiling that is so politically incorrect in this country they would never be able to stop the number of attacks they have over the years.

We better wake up and stop being so politically correct and thinking that technology is the answer to all our security problems. If we don't a lot of Americans are going to get killed in the years to come. If the type of attacks that Israel has had to deal with for the past 20 years come here, we are no where close to being able to deal with it.

One difference is that the Israelis are keeping people off the planes and we concentrate on keeping objects off the plane.
