    1. What is good minimal recommended 9mm Target Shooting ammo?
    2. What is good minimal recommended 9mm Defense ammo?
    3. Where can I buy ammo the cheapest in California? Internet or local stores?

I have only used my XD-9 once so far at the range only, and I used Winchester 9mm 115 grains ammo from Wal-Mart. Box of 100 rounds cost me $23.97 + tax.

If you're willing to wait for a little bit you can get 1000 rounds for $160+shipping from Jack Ross Ammunition but they are backlogged about 6 weeks. Ends up about $.017/round which is the cheapest I've been able to find.

For target ammo just use whatever is cheap as long as it functions through your weapon.

As far as SD ammo goes, here is a good list of different rounds you should try:

    9 mm:
Barnes XPB 115 gr JHP (copper bullet)
Federal Tactical 124 gr JHP (LE9T1)
    Federal HST 124 gr +P JHP (P9HST3)
Remington Golden Saber 124 gr +P JHP bonded (GSB9MMD)
Speer Gold Dot 124 gr JHP
Speer Gold Dot 124 gr +P JHP
Winchester Partition Gold 124 gr JHP (RA91P)
    Winchester Ranger-T 124 gr +P JHP (RA9124TP)
Winchester Ranger Bonded 124 gr +P JHP (RA9BA)
    Winchester Ranger-T 127 gr +P+ JHP (RA9TA)
    Federal Tactical 135 gr +P JHP (LE9T5)
Federal HST 147 gr JHP (P9HST2)
Remington Golden Saber 147 gr JHP (GS9MMC)
Speer Gold Dot 147 gr JHP
    Winchester Ranger-T 147 gr JHP (RA9T)
Winchester 147 gr bonded JHP (RA9B/Q4364)

The Federal HST is my personal favorite round with the Speer Gold Dot as a close second.

When selecting a SD round I can't stress enough how important it is to ensure reliability and accuracy through YOUR weapon. Just because it works for someone else with an XD9 doesn't mean it will work for you.

As far as the best place to buy ammo in California goes, I can't help you there.

I run alot of Federal, WWB, & some Remington UMC from Walmart at the range all the time. Whatever is cheapest & I can find for range use.
Carry ammo I like Winchester Ranger, Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST in 124-147gr.

Target whatever I can find perfer 124gr but the cheapest is 115gr bulk. For defense I perfer Blackhills 124gr either standard or +P loads. Other brand if no Blackhills is avaible would be gold dot both standard and +P in 124gr and hornady TAP in 124gr.

What do you mean by "minimal"?

For practice, I shoot whatever's cheapest. I run a magazine of my carry ammo through the gun about twice a month.

For carry, look at the ballistics reports and make a choice. It's whatever is most accurate and reliable in your gun. Not all guns like all ammo, 1911-types in particular. I load my XD9SC EDC with Speer Gold Dot 124 gr. Short Barrel +p. I also use Corbon DPX 115 gr. +p. I've heard excellent reports on Win. Ranger and Federal HST, too.

Personal defense is just that - personal, and your choice will be what shoots best in your gun in your hands.

Looks like Wal-Mart is still my best bet.

    Example with Winchester 22LR 36gr 555 rounds;
    Wal-Mart - $23.97 (2months ago was $18.97)
    Dicks Sporting Goods - $32.98
    Big 5 Sporting Goods - $32.98

Haven't compared the Winchester 9mm rounds yet.

Thought it was as simple as bullet weight. Was wrong, manufacturers have a lot to do with quality. Heard too long ago that the lighter bullets are bad for the gun itself as it would leave more work too clean up... and more jams... (Don't ask)

Is this the same ammo you're talking about (outside of the fact that this pic I found is 525rds and not 555)?:

Curious to know; it's a long story.

Besides the quantity, it is the exact same ammo I use on my 10/22.
