How similar is 9mm Nato ball ammo to your basic FMJ target ammo?

I hate to expose my ignorance but the question has been bugging me since I saw this image, showing about 27" reach into ballistics gel.

NATO ammo loaded in the US will have a 112 grain bullet at 1260 fps.

Winchester White Box is 115 grain bullet moving right around 1190.

So NATO ammo is just a bit hotter. In the +P range.

And that penetration into ballistics gel for a FMJ is pretty typical.

Sweeney reports that .45 ACP ball will typically penetrate 36" or more into ballistics gel.

9mm NATO standard is 124 gr. FMJ. Winchester NATO ammo is a 124 gr. bullet at 10% higher pressure than standard ammo. It says so right on the box. By the way, it shoots great in my XD and the cases reload well too. 10% is a bit higher than SAAMI specs for +P.

    What he said...:D
I run NATO thru my nines for fun...
I found the recoil to be right in between WWB or Remy 115gr and Speer Gold Dot 124gr +P.

THis is correct. NAto ball is close to what most domestic 124gr+P JHP ammo is. So if you want to practice w/ cheaper ammo than your carry ammo & that more closely mimics your carry load in recoil & POI, then NATO ball will be perfect. For SD, adding vel to a FMJ doesn't increase the ability of the round to do anything but penetrate further. A round that penetrates more than 18" of bal.gel, isn't getting you much gain in the ability of the round to perform a stop. Unless maybe you get into a gunfight w/ jabba-the-hut.

    Thanks for the responses!

When I saw the high penetration of FMJ, it indicated guaranteed overpenetration if used in SD incident.

I still only have two mags usually loaded with FMJ for a trip to the range. I guess I need to buy more mags for a dedicated SD load :p

Also those pointy 9mm fmj will make roughly a .23 cal hole in bad guy.
