A while ago I came across a fellow on 1911Forum.com named "log man" who was very skilled at modifying magazines. I had him shorten a couple of Springfield EMP 9mm magazines to fit flush on the bottom of the grip, and he did an excellent job.

Recently, I asked him to do a similar shortening process to a couple of XD-S (.45 caliber) 7-round extended magazines. I found the 7-round extended magazine a bit long for concealed carry. I also found the original 5-round magazine too short for a full-fingered grip. I added a pinky extension, which was an improvement, but I was still limited to 5 rounds in the magazine.

So, I ordered two more 7-round extended magazines from MidwayUSA, had them shipped directly to log man, and popped a Post Office money order in the mail to him for the appropriate amount. He cut the extended magazines down from 7 rounds to 6, shaved down the magazine spacers to fit the shortened magazines, beveled the underside of the spacers to fit the base plates, and had them back in the mail to me very quickly.

log man does excellent work. I have found him to be honest, reliable, and reasonable in pricing and otherwise. The new 6-round magazines look great and fit very well. The important thing, or course, is that I now get the full-fingered grip (similar to, but more supportive than the grip with the Pierce pinky extension), and I have picked up an extra round in the process.

I've taken the magazines to the range, where they performed very well, if not flawlessly. See Post #23 on Page 3 for a range report.

Log man is also a member here at XDtalk. I will let him give you his fee schedule, if you are interested, since I probably got first-run pricing, and I think the job required more work than he originally thought.

    Here are some photos:

As a point of visual reference, I have medium size hands, maybe just slightly larger than average.

Nice. I think I would like that better than the pierce grip extension. For some reason I have the tendency from time to time to over squeeze and grasp the pierce grip with my pinky finger to hard during my trigger pull causing my shots to go low. I don't do it with any other grip extended mags only ones with pierce grips.

CavScout, I just went and tried all three full-grip magazine types; the 5-rounder with the pinky extension, the 6-round extended, and the 7-round extended. You're right. The 6-rounder gave me much more support than the 5-round mag with the pinky extension, probably because it has more grip area on the rear side of the magazine where it contacts the palm of your hand.

I actually found that I liked the 6-round magazine grip better than the 7-rounder, because I was getting a little extra support from the base plate on the 6-rounder that you don't get on the 7-round extended magazine.

Wow, hajora that really was a great idea you had. Improved grip area, an extra round, and still compact for carry.

I know that Springfield could have done the same thing, I would have brought a least two or three and I know some of you guys would have brought some to.

You can PM him right here on XDtalk, Username: log man
Or, you can "try" this link to send him a message:

Exactly! They should ship the pistol with at least one of these.

This is a great idea. I might have to send a couple of my XDs mags to him for modification. I'm going to guess that if the 7-round .45 mags can be shortened, so can the 9-round 9mm mags.

I found these and ordered one today!

I'm a noob and can't post links but it's sold by impact guns and it is a +1 grip extension for the XDS 45.

I will write a review on them when I can properly test it. (I haven't fully payed for my XDS yet).

If someone else wants to try them out though, I'd be interested to hear what they say!
