My 629 did fire Winchester slugs without incident, but I didn't like the revolver for aiming much either. I guess the balance of a semi-auto feels better to me. I am much more accurate with my 10mm 1911 than I was with the 629, even on the first shot. Concerning using guns that were made specifically higher power as long as the gun doesn't come apart in my hand I simply don't care if it is being battered after a few thousand rounds. I doubt I will fire even a thousand rounds of 460 Rowland through it, but it is comforting to know that it is an advantage over my 10mm which I'm not sure would be a disadvantage in itself for general woods carry. I have embarrassingly little experience with this area of hand gunning but from what I can pick out of these web sites the bullet choice is of greater importance than 1200 ft.# vrs 900/1000 ft.#... The chances of my needing to use the thing for more than peace of mind is almost nil anyway, camping in the NW USA. The interesting stories of confrontations of bear or other carnivorous creatures on the web are disappointingly few, and it appears that in the NW bear spray it the more reasonable alternative.

    329! That's a brisk gun!
I run .45 Super using a 24lb spring out of my 1911. I'm pushing a 200gr hard cast bullet at 1300 fps out of a 6 inch barrel -- 750 ft-lbs of energy. That's on par, grain for grain, with the hottest .357 Magnum (commercially loaded). Funny enough, when I shot a Coonan 1911 this summer, it felt identical to shooting the .45 Super.

    ANYWAY,

IF you do convert, I highly recommend getting a longer than standard barrel if possible. The velocity gain is substantial!

Firing it and shooting it well are two different things.

I used to have an XDM 3.8 that I ran a few 45 super through it. Maybe as many as 50 over a year. No noticeable effects. I've since then bought an XDM 4.5 that I installed a Rowland kit in. It used the original factory spring but I didn't like the hard impact so I changed it over to a 22# spring. Of course it also has a comp on it. It shoots fine now, about the same impact in my hand as a Glock 21 that I converted to 45 Super with a 20-22# spring. I tried to find a stiffer spring for the 3.8 when I had it but was not able to find one. I just watched a youtube of a guy that is firing Rowland 460 through his stock XD 4" with stock spring and no comp. Seem like that would shorten the lifespan of a gun but as long as the barrel holds up I guess there would not be any reason to expect a k-boom!.

Try a DPM Systems recoil assembly. They have a triple spring setup that works well for me with a 4" XD-460R.
