.40 to 9mm conversion: NOT for CCW, right?

I can buy only ONE pistol at present.

I'm focused on the XDm 3.8 Compact in 9mm, but could purchase the .40 instead, which can be reconfigured to 9mm. I carry a Glock 9mm now and will probably continue to rely on 9mm 124gr JHP for personal defense. But I'd sure like to have "two guns in one" that would give me a .40 too...

My impression is that it's NOT recommended to carry an XDm .40 converted to 9mm. Is that argument well substantiated? I don't want to bother with it unless conversion will result in a fully accurate and reliable 9mm pistol.

    Follow-ups:
Q1. Does Springfield Armory sell a 9mm barrel that would drop into a .40 pistol?
Q2. I assume the .40 magazines will not feed 9mm rounds reliably. Correct?

I had to come back and revise this post; somehow I mixed up the calibers before. I'm considering buying the .40 but only if converting it to 9mm will result in a CCW-worthy weapon.

    Thanks

I'm about 99% sure you can't go from 9mm to. 40 caliber. Ive been wrong before believe it or not lol

9mm cannot convert to 40. You can only convert down on caliber not up. I carry a .40 3.8"" xdm fine.

As for mags, they are the same for 9&40 for the xdms

Leave the conversion for the range. Do you really want to chance having to go to court for a justified shooting and have to explain why you "modified" your pistol? Even if it's not any more lethal, these prosecutors have a strange way of arguing illogical points to screw you up. Don't give them the opening.

Put in the 9mm conversion for cheaper range trips while maintaining familiarity with the same pistol you're going to carry. As for the magazines, I'd suggest using the proper 9mm magazines because it's my understanding the feed lips will be different in width between the two.

YOU GUYS ARE SO RIGHT.

I knew that that but somehow my calibers came out BACKWARDS in my initial post...

I will revise the original post right now. In the meantime, my questions are based on purchasing the .40 and converting to 9mm (not the other way around)

    Again...Duh

In that case grab a 9mm barrel for the range as previously said and go to town to keep cheaper. carry 40S&W and be safe

No. From what I have heard, they will not sell any barrel.

Q2. I assume the .40 magazines will not feed 9mm rounds reliably. Correct?

Don't know about an (m) but my XD40SC will get random failure to feeds if I try to use a .40 mag with my conversion.

Talked to Customer Service today, the lady informed me that they do not honor the warranty if it is disclosed you are changing barrels (using conversion barrels). But I still plan on using one and yes you must use 9mm magazines. My gun however, is a 5" Tactical 40.

I have a 9mm tac and a .40 service I use the same mags with Arredondo extensions for both guns and do not have feeding problems with either. I've shot many thousand rounds of each caliber with no issues.

Thanks for all your comments, and especially GuysXD40 for actually picking up a phone (dang!).

Clearly I'm going to have to choose one or the other, 9mm or .40.

Just my opinion. I own a .40 and a 9mm. 9mm cheaper to shoot unless you reload. The more you shoot the better you get. Right now I carry a .40 soon I'll be carrying a 9mm. Nothing wrong with a good 9mm HP for SD.

L:mrgreen:L! I just spent a half hour composing a new thread that asks the question you just answered! I must learn to be more patient!

QUESTION: Why are you switching from .40 to 9mm?
Do you prefer the 9mm, or are you economizing, or some other reason?

    Thanks, Agalindo

Not about money, I reload so it's cheap to shoot both. Why the 9mm? Well with today's HPs the 9mm will do pretty much what the .40 does, it's lighter to carry, and I can hold a few more rounds for the same size pistol.

And the 9mm has less recoil, right?
