I want a license to build this.....
an actual patent was apparently awarded for this item.
http://www.totallyabsurd.com/wildwestmousetrap.htm figure it will be around $100 if it includes the blackpowder pistol in kit form.

That's actually not far off...
There's an entire class of antique firearms called "trap guns" or somesuch... They don't have a grip, they have a stake which you drive into the ground or some sort of mounting bracket. They were designed as burglar alarms / varmint traps / etc. Tie a trip-line to the trigger mechanism and then a hinged pressure plate or your door and voila. Saw it in Fladerman's guide to antique firearms while eating breakfast.

"trap-guns" IIRC are completely illegal. there are no licenses available.
I could (and have been) wrong. but tying a string really isn't that hard. |

Many years ago, there was a guy in Las Vegas that owned a VW repair shop called "The Beetle Barn". Anyway, he had several break-ins, and the police couldn't do anything about it, catch the guys, whatever. The break-in method was always the same, and it really got to bothering the guy. He set a trap gun, and it worked. I don't think it killed the crook, and I think Warren got off on a technicality (I'll ask my parents, they knew/know him), but it's illegal.
That said, Warren's break-ins stopped...
