Built a Target Stand

There are many examples of portable target stands on the web and I modified one of those versions for my needs. It had to be strong and sturdy to hold up to winds, light enough to carry around and portable enough to not take up much space in the SUV. Most of the ones I seen fit this bill, except they were using 4 to 5 foot length of 1x2 wood strips to staple the targets to. In my mind, it doesn't do me any good to have the whole stand break down small for transport if I still have to deal with a 4 to 5 foot stick of wood. When I build, do something I usually think long and hard over it trying to imagine how I'll use it, what I want it to do, and anything I'll be aggravated over and not want to deal with when using it. During this "planning" period I usually get consumed and stressed but the result is usually worth it. The wife may have a different take on that though
Anyway, here are the parts list and measurements.....

(1) 10' stick of 1.5" pvc
(1) 5' stick of 1.5" pvc
(4) T-ees
(2) 90-degree elbows
(2) female threaded plug ends
(2) threaded caps
(1) 8' 1x2 wood strips
(2) 2-1/2" long 1/4" bolts and nylon locknuts

Each foot is made from 2 sections of 15" pvc, a 90-deg elbow, a T and a threaded end cap. I glued all these parts together.

Each lower leg is made from a 16" section of pvc and a T. I glued the pvc and T together.

Each upper leg is made from a 22" section of pvc with a 1/4" hole drilled 6" down from the end. I ran the 1/4" bolt through the hole to act as a stop to keep the 1x2 from falling all the way down into the leg. I just ran the nut down to where it touched the pvc wall (didn't put any torque on it) and cut off the exposed bolt threads with a dremel so its snag free.

Each 1x2 wood strip is cut to 33"

Each spreader or cross tube is 21"

Total height of the stand with wood strips in place is around 5' 8". This will work out good for standing while pistol shooting or sitting while bench shooting as the cardboard target backer height will allow targets to be between 3' 8" and 5' 8" height from the ground.

sorry for the cheesy text on the pic - I need to reinstall my photo editing software - MS paint aint cuting it. You can see the 1/4" bolts in the 22" sections of pvc in this pic.

Here it is in transport mode. I still need to find a cheap duffel bag that is 36" long so I can put the feet in the bag too. I carry a rubber hammer in the bag to put the sections together and take them down when using the stand.

Here's the bag contents.

Showing the 1x2's storage in each foot section of the stand.

Sections laid out for assembly.

Stand assembled.

Now just cut a piece of cardbaord 24"x24" and staple it on. I choose this size cardbard because it will be easy to mark and cut using a standard framing square - just lay it on the cardboard and cut the around the sides of the framing square, then flip it over and do it again and you have a 24"x24" cardboard target backer.

I choose to store the 1x2 wood strips in the feet tubes so I don't get wood splinters or staples in the vehicle where my kids may get cut with them.

Its so much easier to use the USPSA style stands... just 2 90's and 3 short pieces of 3/4 or 1" put holes vertically through the cross piece of the U that is on the ground, and push 2 10 penny nails through them and use 2 wooden slats to staple the targets too... much more cost effective and easier to transport...
