Try using nail polish instead, I did this to my .44 that I hunt with and its been very durable and stays bright.

I just painted the front sight orange last night. I did front and rear a couple weeks ago in white and I couldn't believe the difference it made. I used a toothpick to dig out the sight paint and then a clean one to dab in a little fresh paint. The orange looks really cool but it is a little darker than the white and a little harder to see(could be a problem in low light). It definitely made it easier to get my sight picture. I am thinking I might put a FO or night sight on the front. I'll probably finish my AR quest before that though.

Jim,
I've never done it, but the front blade on my .357 revolver is flouresant orange, and I think it gives me a great sight picture. Model paint should work just fine.

I 2nd the Testors white enamel model paint. Clean the sight, then dip the tip of a toothpick in the paint. Let the excess drip off then touch it to the dot on your sight. If you get a little run, just wipe it quickly with a paper towel. Let it stand upright for about an hour.
I haven't tried the Birchwood Casey pens. Sounds like they might be worth checking out. |
