The conterfit pens don't work on older bills. I can't remember how far back you have to go but once you go so far back those pens don't work.

The outline around Jackson's face on the front has United States of America in VERY fine print around it. It's not a solid line, it only appears that way to the naked eye.

I know you are worried about discoloration on the bill from using a pen, but if the bill is real the mark will disappear, especially if you lightly mark it. I mark thousands of dollars a day at work(video lottery casino). Say I pay out a bunch of hundreds to a customer, then later they want to bust one of them for smaller bills. I have to mark it again, because the old mark will already be gone. I would use a pen, and just put a very light mark on the edge of the bill. A very tiny little mark will do, because it will turn very dark if it's fake.

Get this, I have caught a fake ONE dollar bill. And it was the best fake I have ever seen. Not only did the paper feel good, they even printed the little colored hairs on it. You had to look close to see that they were actually printed on - the red ones had bled just the smallest amount. Who puts that kind of effort into one dollar bills?

If you have a Secret Service office nearby call them. You can go in and they'll let you watch while they test it. If it is fake, they'll take it and ask you a bunch of questions about where you got it. If it's real, they'll give you a free book on counterfeit bills.

A counterfeiter might have done a 1 dollar bill as a test on the way up to making bigger bills. You're more likely to pass off a bunch of smaller fakes than a couple bigger ones. I wouldn't doubt it if they put a few ones out to test people.

get a pen. the watermark fades w/in a few hours. i received a 1930 $100 at work once. was saving it to find a dealer until i needed a deposit on my new AR. told the owner about the worth of the 100 bill and she sold it to a dealer last week for $165.

oh and they didnt do the microprinting either until 1990.

ok i didnt know that about the pen. but i will try it.

i have been inspecting it and im pretty sure its real. i put it under the micro scope and compared it to other bills from before 1990 and they are pretty much the same and the red and blue hairs are NOT printed but are actually part of the paper. so that right there leads me to believe its real.

run your fingernail over the lines in the jacket. You should feel texture, especially on a crisp bill. Compare it to a new bill and you will fell it immediately. This is an old liquor store trick to check money without offending people with the pen. BTW, the pens are remarkably ineffective. Many ads in the sunday paper will show as "real".

and the pens are only good for 3 months after u open them. many stores do not rotate their pens and use them for years.
