I used to work for a company that did security systems. You usually have about 30 seconds to a minute to get to the pad and enter the code before the alarm is activated. However, that's only on the main entry doors and motion detectors. Windows and secondary access doors are instantaneous.
Even so, the alarm goes off, the call goes to the switchboard, they call the cops and then call you. By that time, you just might be dead and unless the cops are right next door, the bad guy will probably get away. It's better to have a gun right away than a cop in a few minutes.

The store manager entered the 'hostage' code instead of the 'disable' code one morning.
A huge cop w/ an AR15 and a full vest with the metal plates, etc crept into the building and into the main work area without making a sound, none of us even knew he was there. He looked each one of us right in the eye for about 1 full second and we knew some $hit was going down, kept out mouths SHUT and walked out with him. Once outside, they kept asking us if someone was holding us hostage and that it was OK to say yes because we were safe now, etc. Naturally we were all totally confused. Only later did they say what was going on, after the dogs swept the building. I've got to say, it was the most fun I'd had in MONTHS, very cool. The alarm company took away the 'hostage' code from us!

My parents have an alarm system in their house. And if any door in the house is opened other than the entrance from the garage the alarm goes off immediately. Also all the windows have censors on them. And motion detectors as well for when your away. So at night if you were asleep and someone came in a door or a window, the alarm would wake your ass up for sure.

You men like that black guy that broke in and beat that young female reporter to death?
