Red face It happened to me...my ND

All it took was a split second. my dogs were playing and i lost focus, and BAM.

When i got home from work...i decided to clean my XD... dropped the mag, racked it back, my dogs distracted me, the slide went forward, i 4got about the round in the pipe, went to remove the slide and BAM. A federal hydrashock blew a 2 inch hole in my desk, the exit was 4 inches wide. the bullet mushroomed, hit the side of the desk and bounced across the room. My remington oil bottle was hit and exploded. The bang was so loud, i was in a daze me for 10 seconds. The bullet flew 4 inches from my leg. I did not know what happened at first. the shock wave blew everything off my desk and pieces of wood were all over. My dogs were freaking out. i 1st had to get my focus back, calm them down and deal with it. Well, when it was all said and done, my office, desk and gun are now clean.

i don't fault the gun at all...i fault myself. i now have a permanent reminder of what a split second of what not focusing can do. see the pics below.

I cannot stress this enough...follow the 4 rules...all it took was a split second...

glad your ok, but if your racked the slide back how did the round stay chambered with the mag out? did you just not rack it back enough?

i forgot to swing the switch that allows for the slide to come off up, so i had to drop the slide again...

it was all a blur after that.

This stuff happens and it is better to realize that we are subject to mistakes then deny they will ever happen to us.

Wow. Sorry to hear about the ND, but very glad no one (or dog) was hurt.

But I imagine your desk was thinking, "What did I do to deserve this?!"

(Just kidding! Had to add a little levity here.)

A split second of not focusing caused a co-worker of mine (who is a reserve cop as well) to shoot himself in the leg. I'm glad you just needed a new desk and new underwear. Was anyone else at home? Bet they needed the new underwear too. I developed OCD about this after my friends incident. I check the chamber like 5 times before pulling the trigger, but even I could be stupid for a moment so I also have OCD about pointing the thing in a safe direction too. Scary.
