My dad was 23 years in the Army. I grew up around military my whole life. He would go out of his way to tell people to take their hats off and shut their trap during the anthem. I was raised to show respect. Hats off and hand on heart 100% of the time.

National Anthem

  1. Designation.–The composition consisting of the words and music known as the
    Star-Spangled Banner is the national anthem.
  2. Conduct During Playing.–During a rendition of the national anthem–
    1. when the flag is displayed–
      1. all present except those in uniform should stand at attention facing the
        flag with the right hand over the heart;
      2. men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and
        hold the headdress at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart; and
      3. individuals in uniform should give the military salute at the first note of
        the anthem and maintain that position until the last note; and
    2. when the flag is not displayed, all present should face toward the music and
      act in the same manner they would if the flag were displayed.

Agreed.

Our society is loosing a lot of respect these days. Etiquette has gone down the drain. I was taught to always remove my hat when indoors, like in a classroom or at a restaurant. It is especially rude to me to wear sunglasses indoors, again in a classroom or restaurant specifically. Oh, and not to mention listening to your iPod in class, that's the apidemy of rudeness to me.

It also ticks me off when our own Olympians don't know the words to the National Anthem. They should be required to memorized it. Teach it in kindergarten.
