Paint Prices = Voodoo

As some of you may know, I recently closed on a house. Now, it's time to paint (and do 80 million other internal changes to the place...).

So we go to Sherwin Williams, find some paint, find some primer, and they're having a 25% off sale. Sounds good, right? The paint (Harmony) is about $31 for a gallon, and the primer is $25 per gallon. Holy crap.

Fast forward to Wal-Mart, where their "guaranteed one coat" Krilz paint is $21 per gallon.

Not to mention that painting supplies are @#$% cheap at Wallyworld compared to SW. I mean, is this some kind of paint-making conspiracy here (does anyone really get brand-name-conscious when they look at other people's walls?!?) or is there something in the quality that I'm missing?

I usually go with the Behr from Home Depot....It's not so much the ability to tell after it's on the wall as it is the ability to get it on the wall with ease.

Primer is primer...but top coat paint, I use Behr.

all in all it woulda cost 400 plus dollars just to paint a 15x15 room

Aye paint is expensive. I sell automotive paints and it can run upwards of $1500 for just the paint and everything that goes with it IE Clear, Primer, Activators, and Reducers...

The way I paint, I could use finger paint
My uncle is a retired painter and my wife asked what a decent paint was and he told her that Behr is decent stuff without getting robbed blind. He said a good primer is Kiltz or Zinser. Now brushes are a different story. He spends a small fortune on his brushes but you can tell the difference too and he takes really good care of them.
One thing he did tell me was to strain the paint. He also said to take your roller after getting it on the handle and roll it back and forth over some masking tape to clean off any loose lint. I wrap the tape around my hand with sticky side out and do this.

Ok... feel like filling me in? From what I know, painting is fairly straightforward for interior wall applications. For specialized painting (especially automotive painting) that's not something I'll do myself.

But painting drywall? Seriously, if there's some magic formula I'm not seeing please let me know. From what I can tell though, there's no big difference that justifies the price hike for name-brand versus generic.

My brother has been with Dunn Edwards for years. Trust me, there is a difference in paint. Even my cheap arse painting contractor (that I forced to use Dunn's paint) was impressed when he first tried it.

But you're right, the cheap stuff will work and you'll never notice the difference if you never buy the good stuff. (Ever shoot a really nice 1911?)

The only other downside to shopping at Wallmart is....well...having to be there.
