If you have a cord or cordless drill you can put it in a vise ( the drill ) and use it as a back yard bench polisher
Here is my latest finished project slide XDm 9 ![]()

Thank you !
I should note, polishing is really an art form. If notice on the roll marks they are not "rolled" over or stretched. This is hard to accomplish if your not careful. The key is lots of prep before you start to polish this area. Just go slowly and carefully when you are around areas you dont want to "roll" over. Thanks Todd

Has anyone used a Mothers Powerball on their barrel yet? I think I might try it out on my 9 with Mothers PowerMetal polish. I've done wheels and engine parts with it before, works great.

Is polishing all that good? I am of the opinion that bluing or any non polished surface for that matter will allow for better adhesion of a oil/rust inhibitor. So with that being said, it seems that the polished surface is somewhat more susceptable to rust.

I started with some sanding films I bought at Hobby Lobby for $3 (Testors part #8802). They are intended for building model cars and the like, and can be used wet or dry. There are 5 films. The black film is the coarsest. I used the Orange film (2nd coarsest) with polish applied to it. This did the brunt of the work removing the bluing/melonite/whatever coating. The film is also quite flexible for getting into the nooks and crannies...
![]() Here's the polish $5 at a local hardware store: It looks like milk, but resist the temptation to drink it Once I was down to bare metal for the most part, I used steps as described in the first post, with a dremel and the polish. I used one of those hard white tips (sorry, I don't know what it's made of). Here's the result, next to an unpolished XD45c barrel. Sorry for the lousy picture, it was my Blackberry camera: Its not quite a mirror, but I'm going to put a final polish on it later. |
