Is the "Peacemaker" necessary?

Quote:
The Richland County (S.C.) Sheriff's Department has acquired an armored personnel carrier complete with a turret-mounted .50-caliber belt-fed machine gun for its Special Response Team.
Sheriff Leon Lott told the Columbia State newspaper that he hoped the vehicle, named "The Peacemaker," would let the bad guys know that his officers are serious.
"We don't look at this as a killing machine," Lott told the paper. "It's going to keep the peace. We hope the fact that we have this is going to save lives. When something like this rolls up, it's time to give up."
The Peacemaker has a top speed of 30 mph.

Is there a suicide bomber/ RPG attack problem in South Carolina that I'm unaware of?

NO, not if you got the guy in the white shirt. If you got him, you don't need anything else.....

Is any gun necessary?

You're goin' down an ugly road with that question.
I do have to say that it's awful cool, and since it was proably picked up as surplus or decommissioned military equipment it was likely cheaper than the custom built LEO models. More bang for the buck!!!
If a big armored vehicle doesn't make people give up, but a few hundred rounds pointed in their general direction may, go with it.
If the gun doesn't work, sent the dude in white in.

If that doesn't work as a deterrent, nothing will.

seems a bit over the top for police use. a belt fed 50 cal mounted on top of an armored personal carrier is way over kill for any situation they could come accross against any civilian..
excessive use of force comes to mind

looks like a waste of tax payers dollars to me.

i don't know about the turret on top of that thing, but i know a few counties around here have heavy APC's that were modded for swat. they are pretty cool and intimidating to see.

While I agree that a .50 cal seems to be overly powerful for 99.99% of all LEO use.....let's not forget there have been 2 different cases in this country where a psyco has stolen a tank or bulldozer and destroyed tons & tons of property. The cops had nothing powerful enough to stop the vehicles.......but I imagine a belt fed .50 cal would've helped!!
