That's quite a trip. I hope you like it here in the great state of Texas. Just don't expect any snow during winter!

welcome to Austin. I'm sure you'll hear plenty of Austin's upsides. here are mine:
yesterday dinner was some fresh off the pit pork ribs and brisket with some cream corn for desert.
I write this still slightly dirty from a fine 2hr mt bike ride. ..out the garage, down the street and onto the trails. add dirt, sweat, speed and stir.
and finally, an excellent cool-person/douchebag ratio. it's the little things like when you walk into the quickie mart and the person coming out holds the door open for you. you do same and get a polite smile and thank you. you get a flat out on the trails and every other rider passing by will check and make sure you have what you need to get going again. that kinda thing.

for a more local source on shooting/carrying, you'll want to check in with TexasCHLforum.com. good people there.

as for my shooting I sometimes go to Red's if I'm short on time, but am a member at Lone Star Gun Range. it's a hike from N.Austin but its outdoors and the de-facto rules are: be safe, don't do anything dumb. shoot from leather/shoot on the move...it's all good as long as you can do them without running afoul of rules 1 and 2.

if you like IDPA, I get my fix with the texas tactical crew. good people there as well.

Well the good thing is if you are a golfer, that's year round . If you are running, some of these "hills" for sure feel like mountains depending on what mile you are on! In terms of all these "beers" that are being referred too, I'll stick with the motto ignorance is bliss

UPDATE:

We're in Ozama (SP?), TX right now. I've been away from a computer/internet for quite some time. I've gotten a TON of great info so far, I really appreciate all the insights from my new Texas crew! I'll be sure to reply to all those that have made offers etc when we get settled.

Thanks again!

I simply fell in love with Austin Texas when I was down there. Hot as hell, and you'll be wet a lot. But the peeps are nice and the city is purdy.

I'm moving to Warshington soon. East of the Cascades.

Yep, Leslie was still there as of 1 month ago when I was on sixth street with a buddy of mine. I was in Austin this past Labor Day weekend again and had a blast on Lake Travis. My fiancee and I are seriously considering getting married in a nice venue we found in Georgetown, a little north of Austin (her family just moved to Austin from deep south Texas). You'll love the city and you'll love Texas. First things first...get yourself something with the Texas flag on it!
