There is a used Weatherby Vanguard in .30-06 in a local shop for $300...used might be a good route to go.

Welcome to XD Talk!

Good question.

A good first step would be to check out Florida Fish and Wildlife for information on their hunting regulations including firearms rules.
FWC - Hunting Information

A good second step would be to get a hold of a game warden / officer and ask him/her for advice on what works and not.

So - how are you doing? Are you under water with Tropical Storm Fay?

What calibers would you guys recommend and why? Ive shot my friends FN .308 before and it feels nice but i think the caliber is a little large and costly for routine range trips. At the range we shoot at 100yds which is about apropriate for my hunting conditions which can be from 25-100yd shots. Also it doesnt have to have all the bells and whistles. Under say $400 if possible would be nice.

Thanks for all the replies guys. Giving me lots of ideas. Im liking the .270 opinion. Is that larger than a 7mm 08?

Funny, me and a guy at work were talking about his Mosin today. Ill have to look into all the different varients of it. Are some better than others?

Fay didnt really cause us too much grief. Im in south broward so we mostly got rain and a little wind. I work for home depot so the past weekend was pretty crazy there.

OOOOH I forgot about these, great suggestion. I held one of these and they are awesome. The action is very smooth, especially for such a well priced rifle.

I love my Savage in .270, it'll knock a deer or hog down. If you check out the good mil-surplus joints you might be able to pick up a Remington or Springfield 1903, if you like peep sights- they're also good guns to sporterize. Check the classified ads, you might find a few gems in there. You might find a used Browning or Ruger, but chances are pretty slim in the classifieds.

I highly doubt you are going to find a 1903 in the price range the OP stated. Unless it has been neglected and bubbafied.

I recently bought a Savage in .270 from Wally world...it came with the scope.
The optics aren't the best available out there (really? ) but it does the job.
I dropped a 285 pound hog on a ranch west of Cocoa a couple months ago. (for pics search 'my own hogzilla' thread.)

I settled on the 270 because it is a very versatile round and will take any big game animal in North America and is a very flat shooting round.

I think I paid in the $350 range and for an entry level rifle it has served me well so far!
