Next time you are somewhere that sells rat poison, pick it up and have a look at the ingredient. One ingredient, sodium fluoride (same as they put in the water and toothpaste). They say that the levels are so low as to not be poisonous, but I'd love to be able to talk to one of those people, and take out some rat poison, put a little on the tip of a toothpick, and ask if they'd be willing to prove how confident they are of that and eat it... or smear some on their teeth.
Yeah that chlorine. That will kill ya quick. However NOT having the chlorine in the water will kill you and 10,000 other people even quicker. Luddites really scare me.

I can't tollerate the local water here. It just has too many disolved minerals and one other thing I can live without.

RADON!

I don't like the fact that my water has RADON in it but the E-coli that occasionally shows up makes me a little snobby about my water.

Thanks for the tip, but as long a bottled water costs more than gasoline, the tap is fine for me.

Even outside of Tampa here in Odessa our tap water has "floaties" in it. I refill my gallon jugs at the Glacier machines. Not sure if it gets the chemicals out but at least it's clear and tasteless.

Well here is probably the only situation besides gas prices and the fact that someone else pumps it that living in NJ is a good thing. Down here on the south side of the state we live over one of the largest fresh water aquifers in the world. Comes out of a well in the back yard and is fresh clean tasy and free.

I don't know much about under sink units, but I use the "Berkey Light"

You dump water in the top reservoir, and it uses gravity to filter it into the bottom. If you want to get the fluoride out, that is harder to do apparently, and you get the additional fluoride filter(pf-2 element), which also gets a few other toxins out.
The filters last around a year, depending on how much water you drink. If you don't drink much, probably longer. The reservoirs on this model are simply two plastic tubs that sit on top of one another, and I have thought to myself that I could have just bought the filters, and made my own reservoir system with two plastic tubs, a drill, and some rubber gaskets and a spigget, and saved 100 dollars.
So, after you eat the intial cost, or make your own reservoirs, it's around $150 a year with the fluoride filters, or $100 without.
