how to get better gas mileage in 2001 Ford Excursion?

2 wheel drive, 2001 excursion V10 gasoline engine...

Any ways to get better gas mileage in this beast? Will getting a K&N Cold Air Intake or an AirRaid ColdAirIntake incase the gas mileage any? They dont say anything about it, only 15-18HP gains.. but I figured if it could breathe better, it'd get better MPG?

Anything else?

Thanks

You are pretty much stuck with bad gas mileage in that thing.

The K&N would help, but probably not enough to even tell on that beast.

There are all the obvious ways....

turn the car off if sitting longer then 30-60 seconds
dont drive over 65mph
avoid "lead foot" acceleration

I have K&N filters on all of our cars, as do her and my parents (in total: 2 grand prixs, 1 jeep cherokee, dodge magnum, dodge dakota, chevy hhr, new mustang, firebird, dodge ram). Obvious car enthusiasts!!!

I cant say i notice a big gas efficiency with the filter, but it cant hurt.

i have K&N filters in all of my cars...save $ in the long term on filters, but does not improve gas millage much.

the excursion is helpless in this arena...sell it...if you can.

needed a bigger SUV than the 07 pathfinder. I dont know what it gets yet but I've read where people get 12 city/20 hwy.. and some people average 16mpg.. the pathfinder gets 17mpg so upgrading to a SUV this size and getting 1-2 mpg less wont be that big of a deal...

Well if increasing the airflow wont help any, might as well save the $260+ that the air intakes cost.

The problem is not the efficiency of the engine as much as it is that you are pushing a brick down the highway. Really, the things you add may make incremental differences that you will be able to maybe recover costs over time, but the best thing to do is just go light on the pedal. If you have large tires and wheels, that aint gonna help. If you have a bug guard or grill guard, that aint gonna help. If you have a large breasted woman hanging out the sunroof, that might help, but it wont help the fuel mileage..
