SI article about China's "womens" gymnastics team

IOC refuses to doubt China's kid gymnasts - Selena Roberts - SI.com

Interesting. We (friends) noticed the missing teeth as well.

China is a shady place, and everyone knows it. The article mentions Cheek's last-minute-revocation of his Visa. Strange that China wouldn't want someone there who opposes their support of genocide in Darfur. Not mention their attempts to clear the air in Beijing.

I'm not saying that the American women should've won (they made some large mistakes), but things seem fishy.

I know the US Women's Gymnasts screwed up big time, and totally aside from how the Team Competition ended, does anyone who watched the Chinese team perform the last few days really think their athletes meet the minimum age (16 years old) requirement?

I have a 15 year old daughter at home... those Chinese Olympians looked to me to be maybe 12-13 years old, at most. No hip, breast or shoulder development, little musculature in the upper arms and chest, when they would smile, the teeth looked like those of a 12-year old. Their weights in the 75-85 pound range.... didn't look right to me.

Youth is a definite advantage for gymnasts, especially female gymnasts... greater flexibility, lesser mass (weight), different center of gravity (as the pelvic region and breasts are undeveloped)... that's why the age limit was instituted some time back. At 20, unless you are exceptional, you are washed up. (Cathy Rigby, I still adore you!)

Assuming the other competing teams complied with the age requirement, I seriously doubt this was a level playing field.

There have been several instances of "good home cookin'" so far. I agree that the gynastics participants are of questionable age and I think 12 or 13 might be a little old for one or two of them. There have also been questionable things happen in boxing and other events. We watched a boxing match the other night and the two guys had beaten each other to the point that they could barely stand up and the score was 1 to 0. The Olympics need to get themselves squared away or they'll go away.

Any sport that requires judging is not a real sport, it is an exhibition. The clock or the scoreboard does not discriminate (except in the case of the refs in 1972). Everything else is relative.

You're correct. I'm not very good with quotes, but I was close. Sorta.

I bet they're 16, and they just give them some drug to supress puberty. I think the entire Chinese team is juiced one way or the other. If those stooges at Balco could come up with an undectecable steroid, what do you think the Chinese could do?
