I'd give the father a medal for protecting his family. I'd tell him to aim for the head next time.

The police dept. has no ground to stand on and those officers are in poor taste for accepting an award for not dying by their own stupidity and lack of planning.

"Hey officer, there's a bad guy at the bottom of this cliff. Jump off and get him."

"OK"

"Oh... wow, he lived, and that wasn't a bad guy, just a tourist. Hey! Let's give out medals."

"The easy decision would have been to retreat under covering fire. The team did not take the easy way out," Dolan told the crowd. "This is a perfect example of a situation that could have gone horribly wrong, but did not because of the professionalism with which it was handled."

how did it not go wrong? they busted into the wrong house and exchanged fire with the owner...by some stroke of luck no one got killed...just because no one died doesn't mean it went right! It still went horribly wrong!

I understand the swat team was responding to bad information, so fiering them isnt needed, but giving them an award is just like sh!ting and throwing it in the home owners face!

This is what happens under tyranny. I really hope that people wake up, and fast. These sorts of stories about police abuse with no consequences are becoming way too common.
Under tyranny, the purpose of the police isn't to enforce the law, but to terrorize people and make them afraid to speak up or criticize anything the government does. An award for breaking into an innocent person's house and exchanging gunfire with them is encouraging terrorizing citizens.
In a society where the police are to enforce the law, they would all be punished for this.

Not without precedent.

The FBI wanted to give medals and bonuses to the agents who were ordered by Bill Clinton, and Janet Reno to burn down the Branch Dividian compound, which killed over 80 people, including 21 children. The FBI claims that the awards were not approved.

Yeah...no knock raids can be a real problem. Their "gear' may have stopped buck shots, but the right .223 has a way of slipping through.

So because they were given bad information they are the bad guys? Great logic ... I'm not sure why any awards were handed out but you can't criticize them because they aren't the ones who got the wrong information or the ones who handed themselves the awards ...
