No, I've never seen a computer with the mac address on the outside. Whoever came up with that must be smoking the good stuff. It's usually on a sticker on the hardware, on the INSIDE of the case. If you're dealing with a laptop, you can probably access the wireless card through a "door" on the bottom of the machine.
I've never tried it, but I'm sure you could do it over wireless. It's probably a major PITA, thought. I'd use a Ubuntu or Knoppix live CD. It doesn't take that long to boot. If you don't know how to find the MAC addy in the menus or command prompt w/ the live CD, you can always hook it in to a router and let the router tell you the MAC. |

A Gentoo Stage 3 disc would work quite well. And it boots pretty quick since it just boots to a console.
