yes it is a locked phone...but if you take the cover off and swap sim cards, it will work with any carrier...as far as updating goes, people i know who use soft-hacked ones don't update until hacked firmware comes out...it doesn't take long anymore

That doesnt make sense to me. If you take the Sim card out the proper way (without removing the cover) and put in another carriers it doesnt just start working. Taking the cover off wouldn't make a difference. If it were that easy why would it take a few hackers from russia and the US to unlock the first iphone? 100% of the phones att has are locked to att's network. Besides entering a subsidy unlock code or hacking it there isnt another way to unlock our phones.

switch from AT&T to T-Mobile?
T-Mobile still doesn't have 3G service in most of it's coverage area.

If they made the iphone for the EVDO/CDMA networks then we would be on to something...

i had thought about it, but back home verizon pretty much has the lockdown on service,everyone else pretty much sucks unless you live in the middle of the city.
