Why you should always assume a firearm is loaded
Long story short:
A firearm that I was positive was unloaded in fact turned out to be loaded. Why was it loaded? I have no idea. So hurray for proper gun safety. (no, I didn't shoot anyone or do anything else stupid!) |

How did you catch it? Did you do a second check?
Details, please. And thanks for the reminder. |

I was at a gun store yesterday and there was a gentleman trying to trade in his used pistol.
Luckily for all of us, the sales agent observed all safety rules. The owner had handed him a pistol with no magazine inserted, but a round in the chamber. It must happen frequently enough that it didn't phase him any, he just popped it out and handed it to the guy trying to trade the pistol. Probably happens more than I would imagine, but was surprised to be standing beside him watching it! |

Jesus, that could have been ugly. I wonder how many gun store clerks have simply aimed and test fired a used pistol without thinking it was still loaded??

I was given an old pump 16 ga. A few years back that didn't sell.
I racked it back and there was a live paper shell that had swollen slightly and was stuck in chamber. It had been in a lot of peoples hands for a week during an estate sale. |

I was always taught to check a firearm ALWAYS. If someone is handling a gun and I watch him check to see if it's loaded/unloaded, then he hands it to me, I check it again myself. Always. It only takes one time to destoy two lives forever.
