It really is worth going to the trouble of checking and checking again, isn't it?

Good for you to check! could have been a epic FAIL!

I do the same exact thing even if I know the firearm is unloaded. You can never go wrong with consistant safety.

Unloaded?
Just went threw this last night with my 14 year old. I had just purchased a new weapon and he had watched me check it clear and then place it back in the case. He asked, and then removed the weapon...I am proud of the fact his first instinct was to check that the weapon was indeed clear (although he had just seen me do the same) the mistake was that he inadvertently pointed the barrel in my direction when he racked the slide. I said something to him immediately and calmly (he new he had slipped up and apologized). Later, in the truck I let him know that although an honest mistake, the next infraction would be dealt with much more severely. I don't think that there will be one, hes a smart kid with great gun sense, I just want to cement gun safety early.
I will say this, athough I NEW the weapon was unloaded, the sight of that "unloaded" .40 cal weapon pointed in my direction sent a cold chill down my spine! Not to mention a FLASH of anger that I had to keep in check.

Double checking is never a bad idea. When I'm at a gun shop and ask to see a pistol, the clerks always check it before handing it over, but just to be safe I look for myself immediately
