How do you tighten up loose sights?
Alright, so if you can push your sights left and right, that's a bad sign.
It seems like sights can be tightened up by 1. locktight. - blue or guntight, but don't use red. How do you apply it, do you take the sight off and put it on the slide, or do you put it on the bottom of the slide. 2. Peening - I don't get it. Which part are you trying to hammer? pics anyone? 3. Shimming - I can see how this will cause it to sit higher, but don't see how it will tighten it up. Please enlighten |

The way I have always done it is to peen the dovetail the sight goes into. Remove the sight & using a small sharp punch (with the slide in a padded vise) tap the punch with a small hammer & raise small divots in the dovetail. This will raise enough metal that the sight will stay put. You may have to use a brass or nylon punch when you replace the sight so as not to mar it.
Good Luck |

A very thin shim under the sight base will not raise the sight enough you would even notice. It cannot come up any higher than the dovetails will allow. It will tighten up the sight a good bit.
