Chicago windy city, no way it's Omaha

Well about 4:30 or so yesterday a storm ran through Omaha and with it approximately 80-90mph winds. It rained, and sleeted so hard I couldn't see the front of our minivan 20 feet from my window.

The hail took so many leaves off the trees it plugged the storm drain in front of our house and it flooded my yard and backyard with about 18 inches of water. I could have swam in my yard, totally unreal.

The wind took my fence down, smashed my smoker and took out one of the kid's toys. All in all not to bad, but we are without power and we just bought 1/4 beef and a half a hog so we had to bite the bullet and buy a generator. You never realize how much you take electricity for granted until it's gone.
The nice thing is we had enough juice left over to help one neighbor on each side keep their fridge running plus a light and tv.
But at $45.00 a day in gas to run it, electricity is looking like a bargain every hour.
Only two people killed in a freak accident in the storm. Two young teenagers were crushed when a tree fell on their car to wait out the storm.
It hailed so much, there was still hail in our backyard at midnight. So after swimming we could have went sledding.

Be back soon with pictures. Hopefully power will be back tomorrow.

Take care.

The "Windy City" refers to Chicago's politicians.

Storms like that have been an almost monthly occurance here. A year or two ago we had straight line winds over 100mph that blew one of the sides off of a 15 story office building in downtown Tulsa. We lost our fench a few weeks ago and my neighbors trampolene lifted verically out of his backyard never to be seen again. The last time we had storms like this you couldn't turn on the TV without hearing someone cry about El Nino. We've basically been in a drought for the last two or three years, but have more than made up for it.

I used to live in Bellevue and know what you mean about storms around Omaha. They're nothing compared to where I live now. Hutchinson, KS. Friday morning we had straight line winds of 100mph+ with the rain. We lost power from 0130 to about 0600. Ruined the fishing trip I had planned with my oldest son. We've had so many high-wind storms this month that I quit counting.

Finally got power on about 4:30 or so. Now it's that fun old time of working with the insurance guys.

It figures Thursday we got the title to our van after paying it off. Nice little bb dimples in it. But everyone is safe and that's what matters.
Funny thing is there was very little warning from the tv or newscasters about this storm coming. Just a little rain was all I heard.
