Interesting how the opinions shifted from the early responses to the late ones. I'll err on the side of discretion. If I'm right that he carries and he's that good at concealment, it's safer to assume he'd rather not talk about it.

Bree, what you say makes sense, but your premise is mistaken. It's legal to carry openly in my state. As I read it, anywhere you can carry concealed with a license, you can carry openly without one. Having a concealed-carry permit here allows but does not require you to conceal.

Thanks again, everyone.

I'll wager that the early replies were from newly licensed carriers.
When I'm packin, the only ones who need to know are me and my family.

Yep you are right. I wasn't thinking about open carry when I made my remark but in rethinking it I kinda think that the same thing holds despite open carry. When someone chooses to carry concealed they are not wanting to let everyone know that they have a gun.... otherwise they would have carried openly. It is usually a private matter and probably ought to stay that way unless they bring it up to you.

You could be all "innocent" and ask:

"What's that you have there? Right there, on your side?"

Or:

"Gosh, I read online today about the 5 shootings over in Oakland California. I wonder if more folks would carry, things like this wouldn't happen as often?"

There is a reason I carry concealed. That is because I don't want anyone to know. Anybody comes up to me and asks me if I'm carrying they're going to get a dumb look. If someone would have the audacity to try to pat me down they will probably find themselves with an extremely sore arm, and lucky if their shoulder isn't dislocated.

The correct etiquette is to keep your mouth shut and your curiosity to yourself.
