Is the only difference between the three sizes of XD40 the barrel length or are there other parts which vary between them? Could I for example replace a tactical barrel and get something like a service gun?

No. A service barrel wont work in a tactical. I think a tac barrel will work in a service gun. The sub compact barrels will not work in any other weapon nor will the tac or service work in the SC. Have you looked at any of these weapons close up? I suggest going to a gun store or looking at Springfield's web page.
