Aside from food, water, sleeping bag & tent, TP and insect repellant is a good start...

Biodegradable, so after you wipe you can just drop it and forget it.

Backpack camping is my favorite camping, I take a pack, my dog, food, water tent and a sleeping bag.

Oh and my XD and a big knife!

Water purification tablets or filtering device perhaps. A couple of MREs are nice to have.

If you are going to take the freeze dried food like Mountain House or Backpackers Pantry, I recommend you buy some and try them before you go. That way you're not disappointed and hungry.

Also, even with GPS and everything else, I take a detailed map and a compass as well as my SPOT. If you are outdoors a lot, see about purchasing one. If your out occasionally, you might look into borrowing or renting one.
