Aspertame

Is it a product of the spawn of the devil as some say or something not to worry too much about? Due to being a lard butt I have to stop eating so much, exercising more, and cutting back on my Dr Pepper consumption. Aint giving em up all together. Anyway, all the non-calorie soft drinks out there are just nasty and I can't stomach them. However, Lemonade Crystal Light doesn't have that horrible after taste that all the rest do.

What say you?

Aspartame is marketed as table sweetener (for example, Canderel,

Nutrasweet). Its main impurity is diketopiperazine that has no sweetening properties. It is also incorporated in a number of foods stuffs throughout the world, including drinks, desserts and sweets. It is a white, odourless powder, approximately 200 times sweeter than sugar, manufactured by combining phenylalanine and aspartic acid
Aspartame is stable in the dry state and in frozen products. However, when stored in liquids at more than 30°C, it progressively converts into diketopiperazine which is partially degraded into methanol, aspartic acid and phenylalanine. These transformations result in the loss of sweetness. Therefore, aspartame can not be used in cooked or sterilized foods.

I don't believe we know exactly what it's effects are yet. I prefer natural sugar and in very small doses. A while back there was a concern with this stuff being used to sweeten chewing gum. Now it seems there will be endless debate. Your doctor would be able to tell you if there is anything to be corncerned about as far as digesting and accumulation in your blood. The rest of the concerns are still being studied.

I'm in the same situation you are and I've switched to using either Splenda or Aggave nectar as a sweetener. I don't do soft drinks but use these in coffe and it works well for me.

Coke Zero, Cherry Coke Zero, and Sprite Zero are about the only diet sodas I can drink. I've replaced a lot of them with water. I'll add some juice, just enough to give it some flavor once in a while. Adding lemon and/or lime also works.

My biggest problem is that I gained a good 50 or 60 pounds when I was started on an anti-depressant, but I stopped taking that recently and the weight is going fairly quickly. I won't be drinking stuff with Aspertame forever, its just to get over not having so many soft drinks during the day and moving to more water.

I personally avoid it. I have read that it is toxic, and what happened to me appears to support that.
I used to drink 1-2 2 litre bottles of diet coke a day. At the time I was having stiffness and pain all over my body. I thought it was (very) early arthritis. Well, I read an article about aspartame, and one of the ill effects it said it could cause was generalized body pain. I stopped all aspartame intake immediately, and within 2 weeks, and to this day, I have no pain in my body at all. That was enough to convince me to avoid it forever.
I occasionally drink soda, and I just drink regular sugar soda. But 90% of the time, it's either spring water or water from a quality(berkee) gravity water filter.

I stay far away from aspartame. It actually was the cause of heart palpitations on me. I had to have an angiogram because of the PVC trigeminy it caused. Two weeks after my angiogram I wondered why I wasn't having the palps any longer, went to the office, put two Equal in my coffee and WHAM, like a broomstick on my sternum, there it was again. It is the spawn of satan for sure, at least in my book.
