So i have to admit iv never done it. I used to buy cheap knifes and i either broke or lost them before they became dull. I bought a kershaw awile back and it needs to be touched up. in boy scouts they taughts us to use a stone, is this still the best method?

That is all I use. I have used many other contraptions, but stones work the best for me!

Spyderco Sharpmaker

Spyderco Sharpmaker - The only $60 you need to spend on a knife sharpener. Straight, serrated, scissors etc. It'll sharpen it razor sharp and it's idiot proof.

I sharpen all my knives by hand. No fancy schmancy contraptions. I have several different diamond stones and one ceramic "steel". That is as fancy as I get, but they are all held in one hand with the knife in the other.

You just get a better "feel" for it, and adjust accordingly.

I use a Gatco or Smith's precision diamond sharpening setup to set the angle and make the work go by faster. Makes sure the angle and edge is exact the whole time.

I finish up with an arkansas stone, honing fluid, and a sharpie.

DMT stone - just make sure you lock the wrist as you sweep the blade over the stone. Start and keep the blade angle at "two quarters" height, which approximates 20 degrees.

I used to sharpen with a plain stone and switched to the diamond stones last year, they've worked extremely well for me.

on that note.

how about some advise for proper technique when using a stone or diamond stone sharpening device please.

I try and try to sharpen knives to no avail and have not a decent blade amongst them.

oh yea, my Schrade Uncle Henry lock blade has never been sharpened to a nice edge . not even by a knife maker. any ideas?
