Saw that on the news this morning. Our society saddens me.

Two words:

Kitty Genovese.

This kind of apathy has been with us for a very, very long time. (Or, at least, with New Englanders!)

I am going to jump in on the other side of this.

First:
People are not shock resistant. When something happens that is so unbelievable people freeze up. Just like when a bad guy shooter is killing people and nobody tries to defend themselves. The human brain freezes. It can not believe or process what just happened or is happening. All those people that saw that were in shock. Four people called 911 within the first minute. That is not bad.

Second:
Other than get on their knees and hold his hand what were they suppose to do? Twenty people standing around doing nothing. This is more Media BS.

Let the flaming begin..

It makes me sick the lack of compassion we have for each other. Just comforting the man till help arrived would have been something.

Unfortunately, I believe this sort of apathy is spread across this great nation of ours...

As a first aid instructor, I can say that getting invovled in an emergency situation takes a lot of guts. It isn't easy to walk up to a perfect stranger and ask them if they need your help. Calling 911 is usually all anybody feels comfortable with, even if they are trained in first aid. Often times, even when people are first aid certified, they feel like they might get sued for trying to help a guy that later dies. TheyCAN NOT be sued (under the Good Samaritan clause), but they sometimes don't know that.

I will say that I do not feel all the stuff listed above is not an adequate excuse for not getting involved when somebody is obviously in distress. I believe that we ought to help others out when they need it. I just think that there is more to it than some people realize, so I do understand a little hesistance. That's fine - hesitate for a second and then go help the guy! That's what everyone should do.

I think this is disgusting. Not only should people have been out next to the victim while they waited for help to arrive, but they should have been out there to help prevent any other cars from running him over!

This footage looks pretty good and I hope the media can focus on the two cars that caused this accident. Both were illegally crossing the yellow line and driving on the wrong side of the road. Looks like they just couldn't wait the couple of seconds for the car in front of them to find a parking space. Typical East Coast driving behavior. That to me is disgusting as well.

From Fox News:

"However, Roberts and other city officials backtracked on Thursday. After initially saying he was unsure whether anyone called 911, he and other city officials appeared at a news conference in which they said that four people dialed 911 within a minute of the accident, and that Torres received medical attention shortly after that."

While it is indeed disturbing, I think we should keep in mind that the average person would have no idea what to do in this situation other than to just stare at what happened or as another poster has mentioned to just "freeze". Most people do not have the training to begin to handle those sorts of injuries or situations.

I am more surprised at the cars that drove around him and continued on, they should at least have stopped their car at a safe distance from him to shield him from possible further injury from other automobiles.
