I agree. Another thing, you didn't mention your size. Height and weight are factors to your choice. If you're a larger guy, think larger bike. Also, 33 mpg on a 750 sounds lame. My "Hardly" Evo gets 35 in town, and 50 on the road. And I'm a big guy.

Your decision should also factor in normal conditions, road, weather, etc. A lot of my riding is on main roads, sometimes 2 lane, with 18 wheelers at 70+ MPH, so weight of the bike is definitely a factor.

After your training, you'll be a bit more aware of the market and your needs. Buy whatchalike!

Feel free to chime in Sgt.
I think you said it quite well. I ride with many Harley guys, and we just had a trip to MT on our bikes, everyone thought I wouldn't make it, and low and behold I was the only one who didn't have a problem. I was riding a $2K bike while everyone else was in the $15k and up range.

Who are you to say what I do and what I make? I could afford Harleys I just don't believe in paying $20k for a name.

Anyone can afford ANYTHING, if they choose to. I do NOT need to keep-up-with-the-Jones'. Obviously you have good feelings towards Harley, obviously you are NOT open minded enough to see that others won't. This is exactly the problem I have with SOME Harley owners. "If you don't own a Harley, you ain't $hit". I had a fellow come in my shop yesterday that wanted to buy something. SO I answered all of his questions, then we started talking about the recent weather. It's been really nice and sunny, ok HOT, but not much rain. Except some sneak attacks by Mother Nature at night.

He said the reason he needs what we talked about, is that his tools got wet during that heavy rain we just received. I said, "yea, I woke up from a dead sleep and did a quick, windows are up, bike's inside, dog's inside. Ok all good", and tried to go back to sleep.

He asks " what kind of bike you got". I told him my GF has a Magna 750, and I was still deciding. He said "well, I have a V-Rod, and my wife has an 883. The 883 is for sale though, she can't ride it anymore due to back problems. "

I said "yea, I can't do it either since I had back surgery last year." He agreed, then we talked about the bikes, and his Corvettes. Yes he has 3. I hate to categorize but this guy is going to be difficult to deal with, and won't be open to many suggestions. I did sell him though!

The 2 engine powered things in the world that I dislike the most.

Why because a few owners make the rest of the world feel like they are less since they don't own them. Both of which are in need of constant repair, and maintenance. I know it's not true for every one of them, but it seems like all I hear is 'my Corvette is in the shop, or I dropped the Harley off last week.' Why doesn't anyone say " I'm driving my 'vette" or " I didn't have to do a damn thing to my Harley this month".

Back to the Magna vs. Honda V-Twin question.
I was going to say something along the lines of this, but you have already seemed to notice it. It seems as if the Harley riders think they are too good for everyone else. As luck would have it I ride with Harley guys, my dad has a Harley, and his friends do as well, and they are cool, they ride with me. However I find it funny when one of their friends comes out to ride and they see me on my Suzuki they instantly refuse to ride with the group, what the hell is that, is my reflection in his ball of chrome causing him to look less cool? Perhaps it was a shame to his egotistical, over-priced, under-engineered, under-performing, noise making penis extension! Whatever it is, it is his problem. Most people are like you and I, we buy a bike to ride the wheels off of it, and others buy their bikes to park them in front of bars and in the service department of dealerships.

Back to the Magna Vs. Honda, I have ridden neither so I unfortunately can't help you there.

If there is any other brand I am as loyal to as Volvo...it is Honda motorcycles.

I have a Honda XL125 and a TRX450 Foreman ATV and LOVE Honda's motorcycles. Sure, there are bigger, faster machines with more gadgets and features, but Hondas have them all beat with their reliability and build quality. While my buddys sna their indy rear suspensions on their bigger ATVs and their dirt bikes won't start.....my old Hondas fire right up and keep on going.

My brother (who is ten times harder on this stuf than I am) also owns two Honda ATVs and a Honda dirtbike and he too has had very good luck with them. We've had our Hondas for many, many years.

I know...Kawasaki pretty much rules the roost on the motocross curcuit and Polaris and Yamaha make bigger ATVs with fuel injection, power steering and indy rear suspensions, but they also have more problems. Hondas are not as exciting...but they stay together longer.

Do some research on them and find the bike you want and yes..you have my blessings on wanting an older Honda. They're definately the way to go, if you ask me. I am not looking to win races...I want them to work right and not give me problems. Honda bikes do just that.

I will probably always have Honda motorcycles and ATVs...they have seved us very well.

choosing a motocycle

whenever i have wanted to purchase a bike/motocycle,
i have used this website: powersportsnet.com

this site lists about every know type of cycle and atv and water craft with reviews by real time people.

some of the reviews are just one or two lines but most are helpful and the bar scale is used to rate performance, comfort, etc, with a star rating for the overall.

check it out.

cheers,

Hm...

I just took a peak at the site and it seems to be a retailer of motorcycle gear. I couldn't find any bike reviews.

Why don't you guys put him on a rocket and aim it at a ditch!!! It' like how my daughter wants my sportster.... she's 13. It would be irresponsible for me to give it to her. So suggest anything in the 600 to 650 cc range... it's fast/comfortable enough, weight is good, flickable in the control department.
Allways respect the beach... she will never forgive you and get you back man. It's just like a gun, treat it likes it's loaded.... always.

Anyway, happy ridn... You gettn a loaner for the course or what?

I bought a Honda Sabre V45 in 1983 (or 84 - remember old age is setting in). I loved that bike, but when the first child arrived the said I had to sell since I couldn't be a good Dad if I was dead. This engine is the same as was put in the Magna about that time. Take the four over the two. The two cylinder engines are in response to Harley. The only disadvantages I can see with a four is maintenance and fuel mileage.

I was not fond of the riding position of the Magna. Don't settle for something and have to buy twice. Be patient and get what you like/want.

To the Magna V65 poster - I remember the Honda commercial. I used to know the name of the rider in it? I don't recall that clutch lever moving once.

When Honda came out with it's 454cc bike it was faster than a 454 CI. vette.

Fast is relative. Have fun and be safe.

Now can't we all just get along??

Seriously, when I am out riding on my crotch rocket, I wave at every bikers on the incoming lane. Most return the gesture of comradery; guess which crowd ingores me the most? Those Hell Angel look-alikes (or wannabes). The stereotyping is not at all untrue sometimes.
