The only time so far I have ever had to draw my weapon occurred while taking my dog out. I live in an apartment complex filled with families and college students. As I was walking my dog around the back of the building I heard two sets of feet walking my way slowly I glanced back out of the corner of my eye to see two gentlemen crouched low about 10 yards behind me, my dog caught scent of them and started barking when I turned around they were within 5 yards so I drew my weapon as defense. They both raised their hands and started yelling at me "Whoa man its us". My wife and I have no friends that live in this complex with us. I ask who they are they proceed to tell me as I back up, that a friend of theirs lives in the building next to mine and has a dog that looks similar to mine so they thought I was him and figured they would try scare him. I told them next time to make sure they know who they are trying to scare next time before someone gets hurt or worse. Never have had to since then.

I carry my XD40 service on duty with a TLR-2 (laser/light). I've had on occasion to show a few guys the camera lens, but thank God I've never had to actually use the flash.

We all carry for that one day. But lets all hope and pray that day will never become a reality.

^5 for the GG. No practice, no Experience ....no Plan. He did what he had to do. I believe in a plan... when I first got my XD I made a plan with my wife. If I can't get to my gun by the bed.... money is in the safe and my 10mm in your the BG face all 9 rounds. Safe queen cocked and loaded.
When I don't shoot the plan is gun on the floor away from the BG.... face down legs crossed.... hands behind the back.. and me 5-10 yds away with the wife calling 911.... holding that position till the cops show up. Leave the BG's gun as far away from him as possible.... giving me distance between the BG his gun and I. Cover someplace so the BG has a rough time finding me.

First case was someone waiting in a parking lot to confront me after work. He made a movement with his hand toward his waist inside his jacket. I drew first, and told him to leave immediately. He got in his car and left. No fireworks required. Second case was in a motel parking lot, while I was unloading the family baggage. Crackhead pulled his rusty car up 10 feet behind me, got out and started walking toward me demanding money. At 6 feet, I had him covered, and instructed him to leave immediately. Both times, no one earned a bullet. Life went on nicely for everyone. But, in both cases, I determined that a potential threat was imminent. Had the BG's continued in their plans, they would have been shot.

I've never had to draw a weapon for self defense and I hope I never have to draw. Since I've been back from the desert I have been a little lighter of a sleeper. I hear my dog moving around in her cage and that wakes me up (not knowing that it's her) and my first reaction is someone is in the house that isn't supposed to be and grab a gun. It takes a couple seconds and then I realize that it's just my dog moving around trying to get comfortable. I'm always on the ready though. In this crazy world you never know what's going to happen.

I've never had to use it, but I did give the landlord a scare when we woke me up by making noise in the kitchen after letting himself in. Needless to say he doesn't come over anymore without no less than 3 calls and a knock and ring of the doorbell.

Going backk to the fella from dc.com...wasn't the lights out in the apartment as well = spraying and praying? The GG heard the break in and saw the silhouette coming down the hall and he started pulling the trigger.
