He hit the guy 6 TIMES and he lived?!? Was he shooting for the knees?

Awesome plan though:
1- Shoot magazine, disable gun.
2- Shoot knees, disable crazy ex-boyfriend.

Perhaps because it was a 9mm?

14 shots and only six hits??... it was not because it was a 9mm.. it was because of poor shot placement..

I am not digging on the guy, after all potentially taking someones life even in defense is allot harder that it looks on TV both morally & Physically. But it would seem to me he was not looking at what he was shooting at, considering.

There is a huge legal concern about discussing SD shooting or encounters. While it may not seem like much of a deal now, lets say 20 yrs from now you have to deal with such an unfortunate event. God forbid the PA comes across the convo you had 20 yrs ago and decides to use it. Just the way I see it..

anyway never pulled or used my XD in SD...

Even trained police officers only average around a 50% shot/hit ratio. 6 hits is pretty impressive. I'd blame his AMMO not his technique.

We had a suspect shot 22 times here once, and he was revived at our level one trauma center. He survived.

IIRC he described "tunnel vision", he said he looked down and his slide was locked back but he kept pulling the trigger....

and he traded the XD-9 in for a Sig P229 in 40 S/W...

i thought that was funny.....he thinks caliber is going to make up for his piss-poor shot placement

This is all quite interesting to me. When I bought my XD (first handgun) I had to do all the weighing and balancing--larger caliber versus being able to afford to buy practice ammo versus being proficient enough to make the shots count.

I ended up w/ the Service 9mm, a choice I'm very happy with. But I realize that I need to be decent enough with it to make the stopping power it does have count, and I'm a pretty decent shot with it--when nobody is shooting back. A bonus w/ the 9mm was the 16-shot magazine. Part of my practice is rapid fire in center of mass, thinking that should get anybody's attention. A 16-round magazine allows that to happen.

I have to wonder if this particular guy wasn't trying to kill his attacker but instead disable him. He couldn't have been more than 15 or so feet away, how hard is it to hit center of mass from that distance?

Then again, maybe he didn't shoot much.

I also wonder what load he had.

And finally, I realize how easy it is to play Monday morning quarterback and second-guess people from afar. I can shoot and practice and learn all I want, but what I cannot know is how I'll react when the SHTF. So I practice, hoping that habits will help during the adrenaline rush.

you know, no matter how many times we go to the range and practice our shooting on PAPER targets, we are shooting just that... PAPER.

i know a lot of people who say that they wouldn't hesitate to shoot a BG and i'm sure they wouldn't, but you can be spot on when all you have on the other end of the barrel is a paper target and not someone who can do some physical damage to you.

give the guy a break. you don't know the situation and how he felt when all of this was going down. EVERYONE reacts different to certain situations. we can train 24/7 to be spot on and do perfect at the range, but sometimes all that training goes out the window during that first encounter. i've heard of many cases where people (even cops and military personnel) go through a lot of stress when they first had to use their gun to shoot a person.

I read the account of the guy shooting the crazy ex. He said in the darkness he couldn't see his sights, so was shooting blind. His post got me to thinking, and one of our 9SC now has a laser.

Four shots into a moving / shooting bad guy in a dark house is okay shooting to me! He stopped the attack and he and girlfriend lived through it.
