Although I swear by synthetics in my truck and cars...I still stick to Break Free as a rust preventative and Tetra Grease on the slide rails.

Some swear by Mobil 1 on their guns but Break Free i holding up fine and its avaiable everywhere so why switch?

Not a bad article but there are a few points that are off. The main thing that most people forget is that the additives in a gun oil are more important than the base oil unless you are in VERY cold weather. Viscosity is only one component of an effective lubricant.

Anti-wear and extreme pressure additives are very important in gun lubrication because they operate in the boundary regime (metal on metal) only and do not benefit from the hydrodynamic regime that rotary bearings do.

Motor oil and ATFs have AW but not EP. Most gun oils have neither, but that is not true of them all. That is why there are a few gun oils that are better than motor oil for guns (plus more solvent base oils).

Tempest, it would appear that you are well informed here. Could you point us to what gun oils, or oils in general, that we could use on firearms that have the AW and EP properties?

My favorite oil by far is Weapon Shield. It has AW and EP along with a high solvent base oil so it cleans as the weapon is being fired (plus no nasty solvents). It also has an at least decent anti-corrosion package as there have been no reports of problems (I have been looking). FP-10 is similar (formulated by the same guy) but is an older formulation. I have used both products for a while and ease of cleaning is one thing to note with these oils.
Slip 2000 EWL has a high solvent base oil and some AW but does not appear to have any EP. I have not used Slip but they have a good rep and I like the base oil (for guns). Slip is not made for use on guns but it would appear to be good for the application.

I like Eezox for storage due to it's anti-corrosion properties and it's OK lube abilities. It is a synthetic ester base so it should do well to keep metal separated for moderate use, though does not appear to contain any AW or EP. Nasty solvent base is the down side.

If I had 1,000 firearms to maintain and too low a budget, I'd scrimp and use a can of synthetic motor oil if it worked. But with the # I have, I prefer to use the Remington gun oil in a spray can with the long tube to get it where I want, and not where I don't.

Thank you Tempest. I have a friend that used FP-10, and has now switched to Weapon Shield as well. He has no problems in our nice cold climate with it staying nice and oily.

Good article on lubrication. It shows how complicated this field really is. Ignore the adds at the end.

Thanks for the info on the low temp properties. Low temp is not a problem where I live. LOL

Concerning rust prevention, here's a review by Brownells of different oils on bare metal.

Just guess which came out the best before you read it?

Brownells - World's Largest Supplier of Firearm Accessories and Gunsmithing Tools

Note that raw steel is especially susceptible to corrosion and is not a true indication of how blued, parkerized, plated or painted gunmetal will react to different environmental conditions.

And the one that was best at preventing rust in that limited test is actually a very lousy lubricant.
