I have used Marvel Mystery Oil on my XD45 since the day I purchased it. Smells better than many gun oils do and its really light and not so sticky.

Read this thread. Mobil-1 engine oil for gun lube???? It convinced me.

If the viscosity of the oil matches the environmental temperature extremes where it is being used, it should provide adequate protection.

I agree, they are making a killing selling this stuff. They spend money on marketing so we do not think of the obvious.

Heck, I really hadn't thought about this before, but I see no reason to NOT use a synthetic motor oil on a firearm. It is no different than the lithium grease I place in strategic locations.

Mobile 1 is the bomb. Not to worry, works great.

Yes, that is all I use on my AR. Our armorer gave it to us because CLP was burning off and causing jams in hotter temps, the synthetic oil burns off at a lot higher temp.

Started using it on my guns. It is a synthetic oil so it is "clean" and a quart will last forever.

I have used either Mobil 1, or Amsoil 0w-30 for quite a few years in my AR's, FAL's, pistols. Fantastic lube when it is -30 around here. The only other lube that I have used that works when it is that cold is FP-10 (now known as WeaponShield).

I also clean with Ed's Red as well. My mix is a little different, since I just use the Kero and ATF, and then add in 1/10th of Marvel Mystery Oil.

What is Ed's Red?

Edit: Never mind, I did a search.

I've used 10w40 castro synth-blend before. Once I run out of rem-oil I'll be switching to Mobile 1 pure-synth. I've heard of people using automatic trans-fluid too.. makes sense to me.. transmissions are metal on metal high-temp parts.

Mobil 1

Only thing I that I have used motor oil on has been the ram on my reloading press. I have read about people using ATF and motor oil, but have not seen any long term postings, or pics showing what the wear and tear looks like....

No way I would use it....Viscosity is too high and I am sure that any piece of dirt that gets near it, will more than gladly stick to it.
