whats the catch with Metro PCS
I am not sure if they are in all parts of the country. If you have good or bad to share please share. I am curious what the catch is how can unlimited phone service be $35 a month, or 4 phones for $100. I can't seem to find anything bad, yet i know with most things for there to be such a price discrepency something must be different.
I see the phones arent exactly top notch cutting edge, my plan if i hear good stuff from a knowledgeable phone nerd would be to buy a used smart phone and get Metro PCS service. My sprint contract ran out i am month to month on old plan. so no cost of getting out of contract. MetroPCS | Zip Code Lookup) this one is $179 from metro all i care about is local mostly, long distance is nice, and voice mail. I dont text, do music, tv or any of that other stuff. The smart phone stuff would be cool to cut down on crap i carry and can have my ipaq collect dust at home and have everything i need in one unit. |

I just stopped by a Metro PCS store today. The coverage is spotty at best. If you plan on traveling outside the coverage area be prepared to pay a lot in roaming charges. If you are just staying in the coverage area then go for it. It just depends on what your needs are.

Their original test market was here in Cleveland. It's very popular with people with bad credit, teenie boppers, and drug dealers. The coverage sucks, and is quite limited in range. Generally only certain areas of a state are covered. Dropped calls are the norm. Word on the street was that the feds were tapping them due to their popularity with drug dealers. I'm sure that's a rumor though.

Dunno about the coverage, but the one person I know who uses it has bouts of angry, raging torrents about their customer service (and it's non-exsistance). I'm not overly impressed, personally...

If the big names have spotty coverage I'd wager metro PCS isn't any better. It's a cool concept, but nothing is perfect. I have sprint and also live on lake erie. I have to go by a window to get a reliable signal. Kinda sucks as my cell is my only phone. I'm typing this on my sprint phone now and i surprisingly have 2 bars.

I've heard service sucks, but I don't have it personally.

The catch is that there is no roaming.
I.E. you can't use them outside of your metro area. This is fine if you spend all your time in one place... but if you travel with any frequency, you'll either pay out the nose for roaming charges or alternately, the phone won't work at all. If you stay in one metro area, though... it's a helluva good deal.

If you do not go west of Ann Arbor, north of Pontiac, into Canada, or south of Monroe they are good. A friend has one and his dies when we are out of those boundaries.
Being a truck driver and motorcycle rider I have no use for them myself since the coverage area is minimal. |

Of course you could get a prepaid phone for roaming purposes and forward your MetroPCS # to it while you are away...
