In the .45 - 165 Grain Hydra Shock

In the .40 - 180 Grain Gold Dot

Still waiting for my Gold Dot 230 Grain 45s, the Hydra Shocks were the only thing they had in when I got my XD. They seem to work fine, but everything I have read makes the GDs out to be pretty much the best choice. I have also used the Hornady TAP .40s and they seem pretty good too.

This was just asked not long ago. There are a lot of responses

What type of self defense ammo does everyone use?

I personally carry Federal HST 230gr Tactical HST

What are the thoughts on a higher or lower grain? What are the differences in a defense situation. My main concerns are overpenetration.

Generally a lighter bullet will fly faster, but not penetrate as deeply, especially into harder material like walls, since they don't carry as much kinetic energy. A heavier bullet will fly slower, but due to its weight is harder to stop, thus will penetrate deeper.
