I give my Pits a shower once a week; I've never had a problem.

4 dogs, 1 cat, a few reptiles, a few birds, lots of fish........

No problems at all. No collars, exterminators, or crazy treatments. A clean house and a monthly bathing for the dogs, that is all.

Similar experience here... been a two dog (sometimes three dog) & two cat family for over 30 years... we have never had a flea issue.

Sounds like Bruce21b's relatives ignored some pretty obvious warning signs until they (the entire household) were overrun with an infestation.

I have had lots of pet my whole life, never had a problem. I know like everyone else said give the proper meds, and have the house and yard sprayed regularly.

Yard spray, flea treatments from the vet, regular baths....no worries

We have 2 outdoor dogs, an indoor cat, and an indoor chihuahua (for those unsure on the dog/rodent issue, yes it's a dog). The cat doesn't really have fleas somehow, even though he spends a bit of time lounging outside. The chihuahua gets fleas on him anytime he's outside, but my wife finds it relaxing to sit and pick fleas off the dog.

We don't have a flea problem in the house, but we did at one point. It helps to get rid of every bit of carpet in the house (a long term project, still have the stairs to go, plus it's old and nasty). We've bombed the house, and that worked great.

However, nothing I do can get rid of the fleas in the yard. We've bathed our dogs, put Advantix (or some equivalent) on them, given them Capstar (a flea pill), and I sprayed the yard with flea killer (2 applications as directed). There will still be fleas, and lots of them, in the summer.

We have too much yard accessible to the dogs to treat (2.8 acres), and a lot of dirt and sand (fleas love it). Plus someone told me (not sure if it's true), that as long as other wild animals have access to your yard, you'll have fleas (squirrels, and I've seen rabbits, not sure about raccoons).

My dog gets Advantix and a flea shampoo bath every 1-2 weeks.

I spray the yard with a hose mounted sprayer about every 3 months during the hot weather. I exterminate the inside of the house for al lsorts of bugs at least 2-3 times a year.

We have had a few fleas, but nothing major. Never had a total house infestation...usually just a few on the dog that were squashed by the flea bath.

Around here, its something you HAVE to stay on top of and the weak pesticides you get at most big box stores don't work that well. Go to a professional pest control supply store and get the good stuff. Ditto for the flea shampoo and always use Advantix or Frontline.

my old cat i had from 2 years old till i was half way through college, she was an out doors cat for her 19 1/2 years (well in and out she came and went as she pleased) she wore a flea collar and i think we gave her some flea meds on the nap of her neck. My new cat he is indoors only doesnt get to run wild on the streets, we do put him outside in a little screen dog pen cause he likes looking at birds and laying int he sun. He has never had fleas, my old cat may have had them once or twice but the house never got taken over by bugs.

In regards to the mattress look into one of those breathable 3M membrane mattress cover, you / they should have one anyways cause it keeps your dead skin from getting inthe mattress. Seems wasteful to replace, if you trap the flees under a membrane they cant eat and die, also on dateline they showed these disgusting mattress refurbishing industry in NYC, anyways huge amount of alcohol can kill the critters, or household bleach like clorox bathroom cleaner, cheaper than a $1,000 mattress. I would buy a new mattress maybe and saturate the old one with alcohol and throw it in the garage or basement or give to college kid realative etc, dont trash it. And dont buy a new one if they wont spend the $50 on a new cover.

The only houses i know taken over by flees are the animals horders on the news that have 40 cats and 14 dogs, those folks.

I've been around cats since childhood and never had any problems with the flies. Actually, cats are very clean, a lot cleaner then most humans.
