Shoot Somebody, Mucho $$$$$$

I had my CCW class today and one of the insturctors is a federal marshal. He said that he was involved in three shootings in which he killed the bad guy. All of the legal issues for two of the shootings were taken care of by the govt. because he was on duty. The other one was several years ago and completely self defense and the civil court cases still cost him $40,000 and took five years to work out. Anyone have any similar experiences or know how much it would cost now to justifiably defend yourself using deadly force?

It sounded like he was involved in other shootouts as well.

If your state has castle doctrine it protects you from civil suits.

Not 100%, but I think in Arkansas the castle doctrine only covers you if the situation in on your property.

Alabama has that so I don't need to worry about civil suits if I shoot somebody defending myself, family, friends or my home.

3 fatal shootings is pretty typical for a lot of PD in certain parts of AZ... there's nothing trigger happy about it - at least I hope not.

To the OP: I went to Gunsite for my CCW and the instructor mentioned a local case that spanned several years and tallied somewhere close to $150,000 in lawyers fees, court costs etc... He recommended a general liability insurance policy to the tune of $1million if you can afford it and plan to CCW. My business general liability only costs like $230 year - I don't have a personal gen liab. but probably should - if you break it down it's like $20 / month.

Castle Doctrine, Hassle Doctrine.

One of the first sentences out of my CCW instructors mouth was,
"Who has a lawyer & are the qualified to defend you if you have to shoot someone ?"

That was followed by,
"GET ONE! You may never need it, but the retainer fee is better than the yellow pages."

+1
Heard the same from our instructor. Was told to check out www.concealedcarrylegal.com and Texas Concealed Handgun Association I need to look into those again, thanks for reminding me of the importance.

Our instructor also told us we should all have one person other than family members to call if we were involved in a shooting. Someone we could trust to be objective and would tell it to us like it is.
