#$%^&#$%^'ing RACCOONS!

It's 2am. I was half asleep and heard a loud crash in back of my house. I went outside gun in hand and caught a glimpse yet again of a raccoon running around the far corner of my house. I live in a county that prohibits the discharge of a firearm, and am looking for any insight on getting rid of these @#$%@#$% things. Points given for entertainment, and suffering as I just spent 45 minutes cleaning up garbage in the middle of the night.

This is what you need. Just put a nearly empty can of cat food or tuna and you will have caught a thief. Then dispose of it as you wish. If you let it go within 10 miles it WILL be back. 22lr is cheaper than gas.

A pellet gun with about 12 pumps seems to be the way to go with these oversized rats. I use it about 2x week around here and it seems to keep them away for a little while along with straps over the tall plastic garbage can lids.

A pellet gun will not get a clean kill with a racoon. That is not humane in any way. Please do not suggest doing that to any animal.

I've had to dispose of raccoons myself.
You mentioned it being illegal to discharge firearms in your area..and i'm not saying break the law..I'm just saying..I ..like...these.

edit: I too go for the most humane way to deal with pests. 90% of the time I trap them , throw them in the trunk and dump them off near a river a few miles away. But sometimes it's just easier to cap one. The .22 rounds I mentioned above definitely do the trick if the shot is placed right. The info on the page is true when it says lethal at short to medium ranges.

Those little 20 grains would be marginal unless you get the coon to eat the end of the barrel. They do sound like.....pfffft..... out of my 10-22.

They sound like pfffft out of my 10-22 too. which is why they are so awesome! They really do pack more of a punch than you'd think. I've had to shoot skunks and raccoons. and i'm the type of guy that just couldn't sleep well at night if I did something cruel to an animal like unneeded amounts of suffering. One shot, it's over.

But honestly, i've been visiting my grandparents alot at their lake house. and they feed raccoons by hand up there and after watching them for a week..I couldn't shoot one again. Same thing that happened to me when I watched Coyotes play through my scope.

Trapping is the best way really, it's just a pain having to tote them around and find a good enough dump-off area. Let alone if you pi$$ed one off enough to make it attack you..I would imagine they're like a 20 pound vicious Chihuahua.

CB shorts work well and are very low noise. One placed right behind the ear and they're done. I "know" of someone who was forced to dispatch 22 of those vermin last year this way.

Even if you kill one, another will take it's place. If you keep your garbage in stronger containers that are not so easy for animals to get into, it would be less frustrating and more humane. Raccoon proof trash cans are easy to find and not expensive.

As my boss told me when I asked him about the same situation- they ate the corn I'd planted and were becoming a genuine nuisance, several funny stories- he told me, "There's no golden bullet for that; only a lead one."

Trap it and shoot it with a pellet gun- I never had the problem of not being allowed to discharge a firearm.
