A few years ago I had problems with raccoons getting into my trash.
I went to BJ's and bought one of those giant bottles of cayenne pepper and sprinkled it all around my trash can area and then set out some highly seasoned tuna...I have never seen them return. I now use the cayenne pepper regularly in my bushes to keep cats from crapping in the planter beds around my house.

As far as raccoons, crushed red pepper works. Our neighbors just put out their bags, not even in a can, but they sprinkle the bags with the pepper and don't have any problems.

Ehh, I wouldn't hesitate to use one of the modern high power varmint pellet guns that are out there these days.

Should I tell you that several stray feral cats in my neighborhood met the same fate as the raccoons? 22 short to the head...bagged and taken to a nearby dumpster in the middle of the night.
Well...county animal control wouldn't do anything and nobody claimed them...so....they "went away." Calm down you PETA types...if you love your cats..then keep them in your home an not roaming free on other's property. I don't send my kid to crap in your flowerbed or piss on your front door...do I? - Brickboy240

Raccoons are fairly easy to trap with a cage trap like those shown. To avoid cats use marshmallows for bait and optional is to get some oil of anise and put a couple drops on the marshmallows.
DO NOT try to kill a raccoon with a pellet gun! A .22 short will suffice. Imagine an X on their forehead, each line of the X goes from the ear to the opposite eye. The middle of that X is where to aim and aim downward. Wait for them to calm down and put the gun barrel into the cage mesh. After shooting them in the head they will convulse around for 30-60 seconds, so stand back so you don't get blood on yourself. The convulsing is nothing to get excited about, just a natural reflexive reaction as they die- they are unconcious and feeling nothing. Reset the cage with new bait/lure and do not worry about the blood in the cage, it helps attract the next raccoon. An empty small cat food can works fine to put bait into, and put it behind the trip plate on the trap against the back wall of the trap. I personally use a .22lr to dispatch with, but other trappers have told me the shorts work fine too. In addition I do regular fur trapping on farmland, so I can use other types of traps and not worry about dogs and cats so much. I have used conibear type body grip traps, dog proof foot hold traps, and regular foot hold traps, to catch raccoons. If you wish to relocate a trapepd raccoon, consider the rabies risks. The coon may look healthy, but could be carrying rabies or distemper, but the symptoms have not shown yet. Bringing an infected animal 30 miles away might create an epidemic in an area that was not showing one before hand. My area has had major rabies outbreaks and I suspect distemper too (raccoons can get both feline or canine versions), and the result has been a very low raccoon population the last couple of years. There are also very very few skunks in my area, and they are one of the major vectors for rabies in this state, along with bats being #1, then raccoons, and foxes. We also have had rabid groundhogs in the state, and last year a rabid beaver attacked some people in Baltimore county, and they had to literally beat it to death (being able to carry would be rather nice in this state, and it wouldn't be just for the violent 2 legged animals- putting a 9mm into a rabid raccoon, fox, groundhog, skunk, beaver could end the attack a bit faster).

It's nice to live in a state where we can own silencers. Going to have to get me a can for one of my Ruger pistols.
Problem solved.

I'm sorry, but I laughed when I read the garbage can line. Again, I'm sorry.
