Yes, because it was on a Friday, Indy was looking too crowded, as was Iron Man. Not wanting to deal with that, decided to watch Speed Racer. Frankly, I was rather pleasantly surprised. Sure it was cheesy, but you know, it really was nowhere near as bad as what the critics have said. It wasn't exactly the year's best movie, but it wasn't bad either. it was decent. I used to watch Speed Racer reruns, and this movie was rather faithful to it (except for the Mach 6, which didn't exist). Christina Ricci...if you needed one reason to watch it, that be it. She looks nice.

I went expecting nothing, so I guess thats why I liked it. I enjoyed it for what it is. Just a fun, fantasy movie. It may take place 20 years in the future, but not in our reality. Which was fine.

I have to say, it was quite colorful. Very vibrant colors, added with fast paced action makes on feel like they were on acid, but without the acid. It was different and interesting. And it did, in fact have a decent storyline. It wasn't just some movie with racing scenes in it. We also see Pops making a huge mistake in the beginning, and he learns from it when Speed essentially tries doing what Rex did (leaving home). And Speed stands up against the big corrupt corporate guy rather well, which is someting that I liked. never let anyone bully you no matter what. It had a lot of little messages like that. It is a very positive movie.

The only negative part of the movie would be the beginning. It starts off going back and forth between Speed as a little kid, to Speed driving in a race. It just seemed a little too choppy at times, and maybe even a little confusing if one isn't paying attention. But it quickly gets it together soon after.

I don't know what people expect from this movie. It isn't NASCAR. It is something along the lines of NASCAR meets Rally Racing meets Formula 1 meets Demolition Derby. There's even a Hot Wheels style track. It's got some 007 elements where the Mach 5 (and 6) have gadgets, and Speed is helping out in an investigation. It's also about a family sticking together no matter what, and I thought that was good to see for once. The best way to enjoy the movie is simply to just go and see it with an open mind (and leave your physics books at home ). It had a very satisfying ending too.

I will admit, I was a bit p*ssed that I had to pay $10.25 a ticket for this flick. I was worried, and was thinking "I hope this movie doesn't suck" at first. But all that went away the first 5 minutes of the movie.

If you still don't want to see it in the theatres, it is worth a watch on DVD. But with the way the action is, it looks good on the big screen...

My .02 cents.
